Lawrence Israel Obituary

ISRAEL Lawrence J. Israel, age 73, died on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Northwestern Hospital, Highland Park, IL after a long illness. Beloved husband of Ann Rothschild Israel. Father of Sam Israel III, Lawrence Israel, Jr. and wife Lori and Robert Israel and wife Suzanne. Son of Merryl Silverstein Israel Aron and the late Sam Israel, Jr. Grandfather of Eric, Drew, Samantha, Jake, Dylan and Zachary Israel. Mr. Israel worked as Senior Vice President of ACLI International Commodities Co. with his father, the late Sam Israel at 300 Magazine Street and later moved to Westchester NY to help run the company at their world headquarters in White Plains, NY. After ACLI was sold to DLJ Brokerage Company for the value of its futures trading, he worked on Wall Street until his retirement. Mr. Israel was honored in 2008 as the recipient of the Judah Touro Society Award for his longtime dedication to Touro Infirmary. He was first appointed to the Touro Board in 1990. In 2000 he became Chairman of the Governing Board and served in that capacity until 2002. He was very proud of the fact that during his tenure as Chairman, a new MRI unit opened and Touro was recognized in 2001 as one of America's best hospitals by US News and World Report. He was the youngest member ever elected to the New Orleans Dockboard, and served on the board of Audubon Zoo, a past President of Lakewood Country club, served on the board of Tulane University Medical Center, Athletic Board and executive committee of Tulane Board of Administrators, and Chairman of the Board of Tulane Endowment Committee. Private family Funeral Services were held on Thursday, August 14, 2008 with Rabbi David Goldstein officiating. Interment was in Metairie Cemetery, under direction of Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp of Metairie. In lieu of the usual remembrances, memorials are suggested to the Judah Touro Foundation, 1401 Foucher St., New Orleans, LA 70115 or Tulane Univeristy, in care of Accounting Office, 3439 Prytania St., Suite 200, New Orleans, LA 70115.
