On August 31, 2022, our Mother and dear friend to so many passed peacefully surrounded by her daughters, joining her pre-deceased husband Sidney Victor Opotowsky. Lillian Teller Opotowsky was born in Vicksburg, MS on October 28, 1936 where she spent her youth growing up with family and lifelong friends in Newellton, LA and graduated from Newellton High School. In Newellton, as Lillian would gladly proclaim, she won first prize in the Louisiana 4H Club Cherry Pie contest. Lillian attended the University of Alabama and graduated from LSU. After college, she worked in retail at Maison Blanche in Baton Rouge and New Orleans where she met and fell in love with her soul mate forever, Sidney. Lillian's true passion was cooking for her family, friends and everyone she ever met would benefit from her passion with cookies, brownies, cakes and her Time-Picayune published recipe for brisket. Giving to others made her feel best as evidenced by her lifelong multitude of philanthropic activities including with Temple Sinai Sisterhood where she helped spearhead the production of the Can Do Cookery cookbook through which so many recipes were shared with the community. She also served in numerous positions for the Temple Sinai Sisterhood, as well as for the regional and national Sisterhood boards. She chaired the Key to the Cure to benefit the Louisiana Cancer Research Center (LSUHSC, Tulane Xavier and Ochsner) and chaired Angel Ball for the National Council of Jewish Women, along with volunteering for numerous NCJW programs and events. She was also active and held leadership positions for Touro Infirmary Auxiliary. Lillian is survived by her daughters Leann Moses (Ted) and Lynn Gutentag (Jimmy), her grandchildren Jordan Moses, Sam Moses, Max Moses and Liza Gutentag; her nephews and nieces Dann Schwartz, Becky Corbett, Laura Gutman, Randy Opotowsky, Saul Opotowsky and Marvin Opotowsky and their spouses. The family is particularly grateful to Elizabeth (Lizzy) Dunams who shared her joy of life and cared for Lillian for the past several years, as well as Sonia Green. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Sinai, National Council of Jewish Women or the Louisiana Cancer Research Center. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, September 4, 2022 at 11:00 am in the sanctuary of Temple Sinai, 6227 St. Charles Ave., New Orleans, LA 70118. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am. Rabbi Daniel Sherman will officiate. Interment to follow in Hebrew Rest Cemetery No 3. To view and sign the family guestbook, please visit
