Louis Graff Obituary

GRAFF Louis Edwin Graff lost his battle with cancer on Saturday March 31st, 2012. He was 80 yrs old. Lou was an artist and free spirit who was born in Elkhart, Indiana, Sept 12th 1931. Lou joined the U.S. Army Paratroopers in 1948 at the age of 16 and ended up in Japan for a while after WWII. After Lou's Army service ended, Lou made his way to Greenwich Village NY at a young age but subsequently ended up falling in love with New Orleans upon his first visit in 1955. Lou also spent time living in Lafayette LA and Biloxi MS in the early and mid 1960's. Lou eventually set up shop on Jackson Square in the French Quarter where he demonstrated his unique talent as a self-taught portrait artist. Lou later branched out and became New Orleans premiere court room sketch artist, covering nearly every major trial in New Orleans for the past 30 years. Lou is survived by four children and four grandchildren and a sister in Elkhart IN. And literally hundreds if not thousands of friends. Lou fought incredibly hard to the end. But now his pain is gone and he is free again. No doubt Lou has already purchased a large pack of pencils and a few sketch pads and is drawing his new surroundings and throwing in some philosophy. Godspeed Lou on your next adventure. You will be missed. Love ya Lou. Family and friends will have a gathering at Vaughn's Lounge in the Bywater to celebrate Lou's life.

Visited NOLA last week and took my daughter to Vaughn's. Krenkle and I remembered you, Nancy and Tex playing scrabble at the end of the bar - all now in a better place, still playing scrabble together in the afternoons I imagine. You are much missed Lou - I toasted you with one of your Kickapoo Joy Juices. You were my first friend in New Orleans and I so wish my daughter could have had the joy of knowing you. God Speed Lou. Keep an eye out for us fools down here. XX

Louis's portrait of my wife, Ruby Fay Lyons Parker, 1957, on a visit to New Orleans with two classmates from old Carr Central H.S in Vicksburg. She was 21 and Louis 26 at the time, and I am sure he fell in love with her blue eyes as I did. We were married for 53 years and she bore me four beautiful children, On her passing in March, 2018, I found this portrait and had to look up the artist. Selby Parker Sr.

Lou, you were the old man in this mans youth. You were a good friend in a sea of people that I remember from that time.

30 years later you're still the coolest old man I ever met.

I could use a friend like you now

I still think of Lou often and cannot ignore the positive traits he helped solidify within me. Now I am 50, facing the challenge of my lifetime, and I wish I had his company. I was a lost young man and Lou took the time to be an example to me whenever he could. Lou was a first class friend

Sorry to find out that Louis is gone. I just received 3 pastel portraits of my family from my Grandma that Louis did in 1958. There is a portrait of my Grandma that was lost back then after being entered into a art show. If anyone has information about where it ended up please contact me. Thanks.

Hello everyone. Alex Graff seems to have changed his email address and I haven't been able to reach him during the past few days. Lou's NOLA.COM online obituary was due to expire on May 3rd, 2013, and would have been taken taken down after that date. To prevent that from happening, I went ahead without Alex's permission and paid for an additional year. So now these obituary pages will be online for at least another year. I have received confirmation that Lou's obituary pages are now paid in full until May 3, 2014. It's the very least I could do for Lou and his friends and family. If anyone knows Alex's new email address, I would appreciate you sending it to me. I wish you all good health and being until we meet again.
