Louis Franklin Munro

Louis Munro Obituary

MUNRO Dr. Louis Franklin Munro, age 86 and a native New Orleanian, was the son of the late Charles H. Munro and Rose Franklin, beloved husband of Marion M. Screen for sixty-three years, father of Charles F. Munro, Margaret M. Newman, and Louis F. Munro, Jr. passed away on Monday, October 8, 2007. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Louis F. Munro, III, Evan F. Munro, Sean F. Munro, and Meagan Ann Munro, and his devoted son-in-law Steven B. Newman and his daughters-in-law, Sylvia A. Munro and Liv B. Munro. Dr. Munro was a graduate of Loyola Dental School and served as a dentist in the U. S. Naval Reserve with rank of Lieutenant during World War II and The Korean War. He practiced dentistry in New Orleans for fifty years. Dr. Munro was one of the founders of the New Orleans Dental Conference and served as historian of the New Orleans Dental Association from 1951 through 1970. He assembled a scrapbook of original records, newspaper clippings and photocopies of documents in other depositories. These illustrate significant events in the history of the association. His detailed research note cards provide valuable information on the history of dentistry in Louisiana from a variety of sources, such as interviews, documents in the Louisiana State University Archives in Baton Rouge, and nineteenth century periodicals. Dr. Munro was past President of the International Dental Fraternity, Delta Sigma Delta; a member of the International College of Dentistry and the American College of Dentistry, as well as the American Academy of Crown and Bridge Prosthodontics. After his retirement from dentistry, Dr. Munro became a full-time artist and served as President of the New Orleans Art Association. He became an avid pleine aire painter and camper and was inspired by the Louisiana and Mississippi coastlines and vast marshlands. Dr. Munro's paintings, which received many awards, have been shown in New Orleans, LA and Arlington, VA. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, October 12, 2007, at 10:30 AM at GREENWOOD FUNERAL HOME, 5200 Canal Blvd. Internment to follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery #1. Visitation will be on Friday from 8:30 AM until service time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Pius X Catholic Church, 6666 Spanish Fort Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124 or the charity of your choice. Mrs. Munro,
I was so very sorry to learn of Dr. Munro's death. I am a neighbor and friend of Maggie's and Steve's in Arlington and had been apprised of the severity of his illness through her.
The death of a spouse is unequaled in the impact that is felt by the survivor. I pray that your strong faith will sustain you at this time.
I look forward to seeing you and being with you upon your visits with Maggie and Steve.
Fondly, Shirley Bishop
