Lyle Edwards Obituary

Lyle Roddey Edwards, Sr.
GASTONIA -- Mr. Edwards, 87, of 1020 Temple Court, died November 10, 2004 at the Brian Center, Lincolnton.
Funeral service is 2:00 PM Saturday, November 13, at The Colonial Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home, with Rev. Harry Shutte and Rev. Mark Tankersley officiating. Interment will be in Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 PM Friday, November 12, at Carothers Funeral Home, 312 W. 2nd Avenue.
Mr. Edwards was born in Gastonia, NC, on November 24, 1916, a son of the late Robert Walter and Annie Garrison Edwards. He was a graduate of Gastonia High School in 1934 and graduated from Erskine College in 1938. He was a school teacher and athletic director at Lincolnton High school for four years. Lyle was in the U.S. Army Air Corps for 3 1/2 years during World War II. He worked for the Gaston Gazette for 36 1/2 years, serving the News Department as City Editor, Executive News Director, Sunday Editor, Business and Financial News Editor and served as President of The Daily Division of the North Carolina Press Association. Lyle was a member of The First ARP Church, Gastonia, and former teacher of the Grier Bible Class as well as serving as a Deacon. He was also a Deacon and Elder at St. Andrew ARP Church. Lyle served several years as a Literary Instructor for the Gaston Literacy Council. Lyle was a faithful member of American Legion Post 23, serving as Athletic Officer for a number of years.
Survivors include his son, Roddey Edwards and wife, Nancy, of Chesnee, SC; three grandchildren, Jenny Keenan and husband, Rob, Ginger Longworth and husband, Andrew, and Carley Hansman and husband, Richie; three great grandchildren, Brittany and Michael Keenan and Blake Hansman; brother, Erskine Edwards; and sisters, Margret Pursley and Jean Jackson. In addition to his parents, Lyle was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, and by a brother, Robert Edwards.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, PO Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28053 and/or First ARP Church, Building Fund, 317 S. Chester Street, Gastonia, NC 28052.
