Margaret Groening Obituary
The TV show's executive consultant says Margaret Groening died April 22, in Portland, Ore. The consultant, Antonia Coffman, said she did not know the cause of death, but that Mrs. Groening was in her 90s.
She added that Matt Groening was not available to comment on his mother's death.
In a 1997 Mother's Day interview, Mrs. Groening acknowledged that her son used several family names for the characters in the show, but said neither she nor her husband were anything like the cartoon characters.

Time can not erase the passing away of a loved one. It's a void that can never be replace,but the memories of them can make our hearts glad knowing that they played a part in our life. Our condolences and prayers be with the family and friends of Margaret.

While filming the outdoor sportsman show she went with us to Mexico. She had me laughing and having fun while with her and Homer.

To Matt and the rest of the family... I am so sorry for your loss, as someone who lost my parents a few years ago, your world will never be the same, but the sadness will eventually be overcome by all the fond memories of your mom that you have.
Matt, I had no idea that The Simpsons was based on your actual family. Thank you for what has turned out to be a loving tribute to your heritage, a comical relief for many of us from our daily rigors, and for the thought provoking storyline and commentary that you have brought us. Our family is sorry for your loss. Our Dad, Cliff Murch, was Margaret's cousin. His Mom was Rachel Vistness, sister to Ingeborg Wiggum. He and Margaret exchanged birthday phone calls, their birthdays were 2 days apart. He always enjoyed their visits--it was his grandsons who especially appreciated the Bart Simpson connection.

I have so many wonderful memories growing up as part of the Linfield second generation. . .My dad, Jean Maulbetsch,'42, was so fond of both your folks. He died a few years ago. . .and we lost another link to the great stories of Homer and Maggie from Linfield, Long Beach reunions, and countless visits through the years. I HAD THE PLEASURE METIGN THIS LOVELY LADU ABT 10 YEARS AGO. i WAS WORKING AT A LOVAL STORE HER IN MASS. I LADY COMING THRU THE LINE WAS BUYING 2 BOXES OF SIMPSONS CEREAL. SHE WAS A BIT GIDDY WHEN AND WE BOTH CHUCKLED A BIT ABT THE SIMPSONS , THEN IN A QUITE WAY SHE MENTIONED HER SON WROTE FOR THE SIMPSONS, A SIMPLE PROUD GRIN, SHE WAS BUYING THESE BOXES FOR HIM SHE SAID. I WILL NEVER FORGET HER. SHE NEVER SAID WHO HER SON WAS OR HER NAME, hOWEVER IT WAS WRITTEN ON HER FORM OF PAYMENT. IT WAS OBVIOUS SHE WAS PROUD TO HAVE FOUND HER SONS SHOW IN CEREAL AT THE LOCAL BIG LOTS. I WONT FORGET THAT DAY. BLESS YOUR FAMILY.

The "Jim Conway" family wishes to send their condolences to the Groening family. Margaret and Homer traveled with the Conway's on many fishing trips to tropical areas while filming the "The Lucky Jim Adventure Show". We remember how Homer would jump in the warm waters with his underwater camera, chasing marlin and other tropical fish, while Margaret and the rest of us would sit on the boat, worried he would encounter shark! Margaret was a great wife and companion to Homer, and she always shared stories of her children. Truly a wonderful person, who will be very missed.
Remembering fond memories of those days with Margaret and Homer.

Margaret Ruth Groening is the reason Matt Groening is alive and because of that, The Simpsons was made. This show has helped me get through some of the toughest times in my life. Thank you for raising such a wonderful son. My prayers go out to Marge and the family.

As the story goes...my dad introduced your mother and father in Everett. My dad was involved in school teaching, the Red Cross water safety program and lived in Everett. His name was Harold Berentson and was about 6 years older than your parents. I have had a great time retelling this distant connection to my children who say "Without grandpa there would not have been The Simpsons".
