Marie Appel Obituary

Marie Kerstetter Appel
Westlake, OH - Marie Kerstetter Appel, 90 years, of Arden Courts of Westlake, OH; formerly of Painted Post, NY passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Marie was born in Union County, PA on May 22, 1930 to William M. Kerstetter and Helen (Ruhl) Kerstetter. Marie attended Temple University and graduated Cum Laude in May 1952 with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education. While at Temple, she earned 11 varsity letters, was named Athlete of the Year and an All American Field Hockey Goalie in 1952. She was honored in 1982 by being inducted into the Temple Athletic Hall of Fame. Her exploits at Temple also included being named Outstanding Senior, Honor Graduate, and she was a member of the Magnet Honor Society.
Marie married Reverend Paul A. Appel on June 13, 1953 in Mifflinburg, PA. She taught Physical Education at Darby Junior High School and Eastern Baptist College prior to moving to Monte Vista, CO. Marie and Paul began a family in Colorado while serving as Spanish-American missionaries at the Spanish Baptist Mission in Monte Vista. Marie was a woman of strong faith and was very involved in the churches that Paul pastored, including Highland Park Baptist Church, Colorado Springs, CO; First Baptist Church, Deposit, NY; and Corning First Baptist Church, Corning, NY. She was a member of the choir and the American Baptist Women's group. She could always be found helping in the kitchen and participating in Monday night volleyball. Marie had a special love of the Outdoor Ministries for American Baptist Churches and spent many summers volunteering at Camp Vick in Arcade, NY. She served as a long-time kitchen volunteer at Corning Meals on Wheels.
Marie loved spending time with her family, especially at the family cabin aka "Camp Miff" in Central PA. Her favorite activities included tennis, hiking, hunting, downhill and cross-country skiing, traveling, camping, canoeing and beating EVERYONE at horseshoes. She was a wonderful cook and always enjoyed hosting family and friends. Her "secret" family Toffee has been loved by all.
Marie is preceded in death by her loving husband, Paul Appel and her brother, William Kerstetter. She is survived by her sister, Mary Elizabeth "Lib" (John) Dunkle of Mifflinburg, PA; her daughters and sons-in-law, Kristi and Michael Astolfi of Painted Post, NY; Jody and Robert Morse of Hornby, NY; sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Deb Appel of Hayden, CO; Jeffrey and Lynda Appel of Westlake, OH. Marie cherished her nine grandchildren: Megan Astolfi (Micah) McCool, Dr. Matthew Astolfi, Chelsea Morse (Matt) DeLong, Taylor Morse (David) Boyd, Erin Morse (Bartolo) Miceli, Christina Appel (Cody) Vondra, Paul Appel, Julie Appel, Michelle Appel; and great grandchildren, Maddox and Miller McCool.
A memorial service will be held for Marie at a later date.

Jody, sorry for the loss of your mother to Alzheimer’s Disease. Since I’ve known you we have often discussed and compared notes as we both took the journey through Alzheimer’s with our own mothers’. I will keep you in my prayers but just remember this disease did not define your mother. The beautiful legacy you have left of her in this obituary is what defines her. I encourage you and you family to think back on her earlier years and remember her this way. During Covid this past year, I digitized many of my family videos that included my mother before ALZ. I can’t tell you how cathartic this was for me in helping me through the grieving journey. HUGS !
