I'm sitting at my desk, and my students ask me who is my all time favorite teacher. Without any hesitation, I said, "Marva E. Smith." She was absolutely fabulous. She was definitely one of the most intelligent people I have ever met in my life. While I was in her anatomy and physiology classes, she often said that if you can speak it and explain it, then you know it. I can still see her standing in front of the class teaching with such confidence. She knew her content, and she knew how to have the students understand the material. While I was pursuing my BSN, I can remember so many times connecting the dots with what I learned in A&P to the concepts and theory that were taught in nursing. It came easy to me because Ms. Smith enabled me to envision what she taught. She just had a way of teaching with a certain level of sophistication. As a teacher today, I really believe that I carry myself in a certain way to emulate Ms. Smith and her professionalism. Thanks a million! I am forever appreciative, My All Time Favorite Teacher!!!

Dr. Smith was truly a blessing and an inspiration in my life. I met Dr. Smith in the summer of 1982 as a participant in HCOP at D.U., I can say Dr. Smith encouraged me to strive for greatness in whatever I did . God bless Dr. Smith's family during their time of sorrow; but always know she inspired many during her tenure at Dillard University.

Dr. Smith taught me A&P. She was very stern, persistent, and challenging in her teaching. She instilled within me the morals and values that make me who I am today. I appreciated her patience and tolerance, for she had more confidence in me than I had in myself. I am proud to say that I am the product of a great and exceptional teacher/woman. She will be missed but NEVER forgotten.

Dr. Marva Smith was one of the greatest inspirations for my success of entering as well as completion of Pharmacy school. I attended her Anatomy & Physiology classes at Dillard University and enjoyed her teachings to the utmost. I will never forget that corner office of hers at Dillard University where you could smell her perfume as you walked up the stairway!! She will be a great loss to the world of successful education!!!

To Marva's family,
I will always remember the good times that my sister Gail and I had growing up with Marva and family. Those were the good old days. We would laugh and sing songs on her porch and just act silly. Marva grew up to be a fine and well respected woman and she will be truly missed. Well she is now in Heaven and in the arms of our Heavenly Father. I'm extending my sympathy and love to all. God bless.

January 26, 2008

Ms. Smith was so instrumental in my achievements at Dillard, I couldn't even begin to list them all. I met her my Freshman year, but I must say that her reputation proceeded our meeting. Although she had a busy schedule, she took the time to mentor me with my own project. Even after my graduation from Dillard, I would still find myself saying, "Well Marva Smith would want it done this way." She definitely gets some of the credit for the success I have today.
I pray that the family of Ms. Smith is provided with comfort in this time of grief.

I am also an alumnus of DU (class of 2002). Through the excellent guidance and teachings of Marva Smith, I was honored to have several of my students perform a genetics experiment for the local news station. Had it not been for her extraordinary teaching abilities, I would not have been able to do that. She was my advisor, in title, but was so much more than that to me. The Natural Sciences division has lost the most significant member of its staff with the passing of such a great person. My prayers go out to the family at this difficult time.

January 25, 2008

I'm a proud alumnus of the Dillard University Class of 2005. I was originally a Biology major, and Ms. Smith was my advisor during that time. However, she continued to give me great advice and encouragement even when I changed my major to Chemistry. I remember passing by her office on the 3rd floor of Stern Hall, and there was always a throng of students, either just chatting with her about their futures, or getting tutoring (even in non-Biology courses, like Biochemistry). She was extremely brilliant, and wanted all of her students, all of Dillard's students to be the best also. It's wonderful that the knowledge she had is the only thing you can take with you when you leave this earthly life. May God bless her soul, and comfort her family, colleagues, and friends.

We called her "Marvelous Marva Smith..." And trust me she lived up to that title and then some. She was always willing to talk to students and staff regardless as to what she had going on. Though I switched from Natural Science to Social Science she maintained active contact and mentoring with me and my career at Dillard. She will be sadly missed by all. We all loved her but God loved her best. She will now go and assist God in doing great work. This is a time to celebrate such a great life that touched so many so often. May she forever rest in peace! To God Be The Glory!

To the Smith Family
"Earth has no sorrow, that heaven can not heal."

Ms. Smith’s biology and zoology classes were always challenging and filled with thought provoking questions. It was a constant struggle and steady push to stay even in her classes. But in the end, it was for the good. Many times I have talked about those classes to family and friends. Not only did I have this pleasure, but she also became a favorite teacher to one of my sons.

As a family we will remember you in our prayers, and remind you that “Weeping may endure for a night but joy will come in the morning.”

Ms. Smith's legacy will live on in my heart and at Fair Dillard. I clearly recall my last conversation with Ms. Smith she encouraged my descision for gradaute school and asked for a copy of my acceptance letter. As my instructor she provided a sense of reality for the challenges that would lie ahead in my current endeavor in graduate school. She definitely encouraged all of her students to reach their full potential and that success would never come before work. Also, she always made sure that we were prepared for the unexpected. Her questions would stimulate the mind and her extreme knowledge and passion for her field was an inspiration for whatever her students wanted to pursue. She believed in us. My heart and blessings go out to the mourning family.

Ms. Smith was indeed one of the greatest instructors I have ever had. I learned so much more from ther than what was in black and white. Ms. Smith never excepted anything less that what she KNEW we were capable of. The Smith family will be in my prayers.
