Marva Wright Obituary

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans blues and gospel singer Marva Wright died Tuesday at age 62, her former manager said.

Adam Shipley confirmed that Wright died of complications from a stroke she suffered last year.

She sang traditional jazz and gospel standards but was better known for sultry, sometimes bawdy blues songs. Among her best known songs were "Heartbreakin' Woman" and "Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean."

She released a series of albums on local and international record labels, and frequently performed in Europe and at blues festivals around the country. With her band, the BMWs, she drew large crowds for performances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

As a child, Wright listened to her mother sing and play piano at church. Among her childhood memories were visits to Chicago, the adopted home of New Orleans gospel great Mahalia Jackson, who had grown up with Wright's mother.

"My mother would go to the national Baptist convention," Ms. Wright once said, according to an account in The Times-Picayune newspaper. "When it convened in Chicago, Mahalia would say, 'Girl, you don't need to get no hotel. Stay with me.' That's what my mother would do. I met Mahalia when I was 9 years old, but I never realized she was that popular until I got older."

But Wright didn't start singing professionally until she was almost 40, according to a biography on her Web site.

Wright was hospitalized last June after suffering a serious stroke following a gig at the CoCo Club on Bourbon Street. Relatives said then that she had just recovered from an earlier, less serious stroke.

We moved from New Orleans around the time Marva died; this was a devastating loss, she had a voice that would go to the middle of your heart. We loved her and were one of the many fortunate ones to see her perform live. May God be holding you close for always and that you know you were so loved by your fans.

WOW, listening to her cd right now that my husband brought me from a recent trip to New Orleans. We saw her several yrs ago there and just loved her. I looked her up on the internet to see if she might be performing anywhere here on the West Coast that we might see her again. So sad to read the news :(

I first seen her sing at the Jazz parlor in New Orleans and I had to go back the next night and watch her all over again, that was the week before Hurricane Katrina hit. I bought her cd and she took a picture with me, I had no idea who she was until I met her, and I knew I had to get my picture with this lady who had the most amazing voice and someone who I could relate to because I love to sing and love to sing blues, I had lost her cd because I lent it to someone because I wanted people I knew to hear this amazing woman sing, I just reordered two of her cd's and am in heaven listening to her, She is someone who touched my inner self, I am sorry for your loss.

When I was in high school, I was lucky to have Marva as the secretary there to guard me. She protected all of us from the scary Vice Principal and Principal. She was a lion at the helm of the Office of The Unknown, so to speak. But she was surely an angel.

I often arrived late to school, because I had missed the bus or my ride from N.O.C.C.A., and I needed a late slip in order to get into class. She did not have to give me one, but she always did. Ms. Marva always had a huge smile on her face as she handed me that "freedom" slip: "No problem, honey! I know you are a good girl!" And even though everybody in the world mispronounced my complicated last name, she knew how to say it correctly and always made me feel special somehow. She even smiled when I rolled my eyes at the passing Vice Principal (I was a teen-ager, remember).

Several years later, I went to Tipitina's with a friend. I didn't know who was playing. I couldn't believe that there, onstage and all alone, was happy Ms. Marva, my favorite secretary from high school, belting out the most powerful, spiritually-uplifting songs that I had ever heard! I never knew she was a singer. Wow!

I was stunned as I watched her, singing towards heaven, sweating out those soulful tunes. Why wasn't she famous? I was awestruck. Why didn't I know?

There are only a handful of singers that have impressed me in my lifetime. I always judged a good singer by whether or not the hairs on my arms stood up or if I cried. So, when she left the stage, I wiped the tears from my face and I rubbed my arms for warmth.

I walked backstage to say "Hi." I knew she wouldn't remember me, but I wanted to tell her what an excellent performance it was.

When I walked backstage, she smiled at me, as I introduced myself again, all these years later. She hugged me tightly and laughed. "Of course I remember you, baby! You were always such a good girl!"

I felt like the luckiest person in the world. This amazingly-talented performer, this beautifully-buxom and angelic spirit in a human body, actually remembered me!

I was on cloud nine. She remembered me! She knew who I was and she was glad to see me!

It wasn't just me, though. She made everyone feel this way. Ask anyone who has ever met her. It was just her way. She was that rare person with that magical gift of making anyone feel like an instant best friend. When she touched you, you felt sparks of excitement and promise. When she smiled your way, you knew that there was more to this day than you realized.

She was the best damn Diva I had ever seen or heard! She gave me the chills that night and she had made me cry. Her voice and her spirit will live on forever in my memory. Ms. Marva Wright, thank you for being a friend. And THANK YOU for everything!

We All Love you,

For Marva...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Music, when soft voices die

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

To Ms. Marva Wrights family...thank you all for sharing your mother with me and the many other people in the world who loved her talented voice and the joy that she gave. My husband and I would go to the Blues Room to go dancing and when they would close down we would walk down to the COCO Club and listen to Ms. Marva belt out a song or two. She wasa ONE OF A KIND! But, I'm sure everyone who came in contact knew that about her. My husband and I were on the Northshore at the ponchatrain vineyards listening to Ms. Charmine Neville and she had announced that Ms. Marva had had a stroke and there was a benefit in her honor. We went to the Rock n Bowl and we were able to tell her just how much we loved her and enjoyed her singing.

I will never forget how she tried to sing a little tune because she remembered us from coming to the coco club. She was a MARVELOUS woman, a one of a kind. Luther Kent thank you for being at the benefit...you were wonderful as usual. There were so many musicians and entertainers there to show their support and love for Ms. Marva.

She will be sadly missed, and to have known her was to love her. My heart goes out to her family, friends and fans. Now, i will play her cd and smile as I look up to the heavens and know u r in a better place.

Take solice in knowing she is in a better place where she will not feel pain, can sing till her hearts content.

Lots of love...The Whites and Olister Covington, La.

To the family of Ms. Wright. As you read what others write about this wonderful lady and singer....may it take away some of your pain from your loss in knowing that she was loved by so many in her field, as well as people like myself who enjoyed going downtown to listen to her perform.

I went to her benefit back in October at the Rock n Bowl..there was alot of local talent there for her....for her benefit. She was truly admired and loved by the many who where lucky enough to have known her personally, or for those like me who loved to listen to her sing. She is in a better place, no pain, no worries anymore.

Peace to the family, and RIP MS. Marva.

In loving memory of a wonderful person I love and I will miss. Marva Wright was one of my favorite Gospel, Jazz, Blues, etc. artist. No matter what she would sing, it would be amazing. As I would sit to hear her sing, and I would be totally mesmerized by her performance. When the song ended, the crowd will shout "more" "more". She will never be duplicated because she was in a class all by herself. Marva Wright, not only touched the lives of people in the United States, but she touched a whole world of people who also had the pleasure of hearing your incredible voice. Although you are gone too soon, take your rest, it is one that is well deserved. My prayers are with the family and friends.

Dear Family and Friends of Marva,
What a wonderful person and how important it was to have known Marva Wright! I believe she is at peace and encircled by love...and I wish that for all of us who knew her. I first met Marva when our friends Pam and Walter said you must hear Marva Wright sing. This was in 2004 at the French Qtr Festival...and in experiencing Marva's voice and love, I came anytime since that day, to hear Marva...including winter 2006 at Blues Alley in WDC, where she and I hugged and hoped for a new mayor of NOLA. So, thank you Marva for sharing so much of yourself in songs...since your passing, I've been listening to your music with such appreciation...again, condolences to your family...I know they will miss you very much, and that your generous love lives on. Peace,

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I was raised in the house next door to your mom when we were young on Spruce St in New Orleans. We used to put on shows for the neighborhood and sing on her mama's porch together. While Marva went on to realize a career in music, I took a totally different route, singing only in school and church choirs. But whenever I saw her out or performing, it was as if we were those two young girls singing on the front porch all over again. We will all miss her very much, God's blessings and comfort to you all at this sad time.
