Marvin Clifford Obituary

Marvin Wayne Clifford passed away on February 10, 2023 at Ochsner Hospital in the presence of his loving wife Helen Stavros. He was born on May 5, 1947 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents Wayne Clifford and Verla Salverson and his sister Julie Daley. He is survived by his wife Helen Stavros of New Orleans, his brother Robert Clifford (Mary) of Santa Fe, New Mexico, sisters Jaylene Worrell (Norman) of Dillon, Montana and Ann Marie Jenson (Chris) of Blackfoot, Idaho. He also had 3 step siblings, Brant Howell, Richelle Howell, and Denise Howell who mattered a great deal to him. He had sixteen nieces and nephews scattered around the west and northwest. He graduated in 1969 from Brigham Young University and then received his Master's Degree in Social Work from Portland State University in 1971. He lived in Portland, Oregon until 1985 and maintained a close connection to his friends there after moving to New Orleans. He was planning to retire to Oregon with his wife this summer. He came to Tulane School of Social Work for their doctoral program in social work which he completed in 1988. He remained in New Orleans until his death although he never loved New Orleans the way he did the Pacific Northwest. He was a member of the Psychiatry Department at Ochsner Health from 1990 until his death. He was known for his therapy groups for children, adolescents, and adults. He was active in numerous professional organizations and frequently gave talks on various topics related to therapy. He also loved teaching others about social work and supervised many graduate student social workers over the years. He taught for 30 years as an adjunct professor at the Tulane School of Social Work and in their online program over the past several years. He also taught for 2 years at the LSU School of Social Work and taught in the graduate counseling program at Our Lady of Holy Cross. He loved travel particularly to Oregon and the Northwest. Not only did he help me, he saved our lives! and helped our daughter with dyslexia. She drew a pic for him and he hung it on his wall. I did not know this was the last time we would see him. He cared so much! He talked about retiring, but God gained an angel n now he is in ultimate bliss. I pray Jesus comforts his family. I cried when I got the letter from Ochsner, for Marvin touched our hearts and lives!

It is hard to believe that it has been almost 30 years since I worked alongside Helen and Marv at Ochsner. Living now over 1000 miles away, I was so pleased to be able to virtually tune into the warm and comforting service today. Someone read "your mind sparkled at the wonder of things," and I immediately remembered how Marv would look so serious when listening to a case presentation, a lecture, a speaker. Yet when his eyes would meet yours, they would warmly sparkle and soften to welcome you, just as they do in the lovely photo seen here. Marvin Clifford was a man whose head and heart were impressively balanced. May his memory always be a blessing to the many lives he touched. And Helen, may the journey before you be as gentle, kind, and loving, as your beloved husband.

Marvin and I worked together co teaching social work courses at Tulane. He was a truly caring man and excellent teacher grounded in both the intellectual dimensions of teaching as well as the tradition of caring for students. We would visit occasionally for lunch and I always enjoyed his company and insights into life and our profession. He will be missed.

I´m am devastated at Marvin´s passing last Friday. I know the impact he had on people´s lives. There´s a saying, though I can´t recall who to attribute it to, that if you can touch one person, that´s meaningful. Marvin touched many people´s lives and made them better. He meant a lot to me too. He had such an inimitable style. I hope his lovely photos are still saved. I would sure love to have one to remember him. Sending love to Helen today. And to Bob, who connects everyone and is always strong for everyone. I will donate to Ochsner in his memory today
