To the Coignet's and Weiss'Families,

I've known Mavis throughout my entire life; childhood, adolescence and adulthood. And although we didn't see much of each other, when we did, Mavis' steadfast graciousness, warmth, intelligence, and beauty hadn't missed a beat, but continued to grow and blossom in brightness and love.
I've been blessed to have known Mavis, and am thankful to have had shared in her eternal Light...
Peace unto You...

To the Weiss and Coignet Families...
What to say? Our hearts are broken. Mavis was a truly special person... intelligent and insightful, a trusted confidante with a quick wit and mischievous laugh. We were blessed to have known her, and we'll carry her in our hearts always.

I was so very sorry to hear of Mavis' sudden passing. I knew Mavis from U.Va. We were friendly, but not otherwise acquainted. Nonetheless, she was always a sincere and pleasant person to be around. I last saw her at the 2003(?) Black Alumni Reunion, and she appeared unchanged since our school days. I want to extend my deepest sympathy to her family and many close friends. I am praying for you all.

Dear Greg, Martin, and Shannon,
Words just cannot express how much we are saddened by the passing of such a wonderful wife, mother, sister and FRIEND. We feel blessed for having had the prviledge to be a part of your lives through our neighborhood. I have spent alot of the past several days thinking about the fun times we have shared............selling Girl Scout cookies, getting Martin ready for his Hornets ballboy experience, seeing Shannon's grace and beauty as a dancer, seeing Greg's attempt at Mardi Gras madness in the neighborhood children' parade, supper club..........so many experiences that bring a smile to my heart. Above all, Mavis was always the proudest of you three and your best cheerleader. Her legacy will forever live on in you and know she is always right behind you cheering you on. We love you dearly...........The Stringers..Susan, LaRay, and Jessie (Mandeville).

I was deeply saddened to hear of your mother's passing. I will always remember visiting with all of you and sharing in your mom's wonderful hospitality. I know that you will continue to do the things that made her so very proud of you. Shannon -- keep on dancing! Martin -- I look forward to more philosophical discussions. I will think of you always and look forward to seeing you when you are in the area.

Greg,
One wants to find the right words to say at a time like this...the comforting statement or prayer. All of our memories of Mavis are of super "Mom"... the AAU games, many conversations about our kids, her devotion to her family and of course, New Orleans. Mavis touched the hearts of many people. She gave of herself completely to any task. The testimony of the life she led will someday bring you comfort. Our prayers are that your pain will lessen and your memories of her will be of the joy that she brought to everyone who knew her. Your Louisiana families are always here for you.

Dear Greg, Shannon and Martin,

We were so saddened by the news of Mavis' passing. We were out of town and did not hear of it until after the services. Mavis was a fountain of knowledge for Stephen and I as we navigated the Jesuit and Dominican carpools from the Northshore. We loved her humor and admired her for her dedication to Shannon and Martin as well as all of their activities. Please know that MOM (Mean Old Mavis) will continue to provide guidance to Martin and Shannon. We continue to keep all of you in our thoughts and prayers.

Greg, Martin and Shannon,

I want to express my condolences at the loss of your wife, mother and my friend, Mavis. You know better than me how special she was. I was with her for only a couple of years at UVA, but in that short time I was immediately impressed by how sincere and full of life she was. There was no pretense with Mavis, what you saw what was you got.

Janet and I were blessed to have a chance to reconnect with her 2 years ago at the UVA Black Alumni Weekend. I can’t say that I was surprised at how quickly we covered the lost 20+ years since we were last together. I was also happy that we were able to spend some quality time with you, Greg, at Rick Copeland’s suite and also at dinner. We had a great time and still appreciate your generosity in paying the bill.

We were lucky enough to see Mavis one last time during her brief visit to DC which unfortunately coincided with Hurricane Katrina in August, 2005. She came by our home where we and a few other friends talked into the wee hours of the morning – reminiscing about old times and discussing children, the devastation of the hurricane and life in general. It was a memorable evening.

I just wanted to share with you a few special moments that I will always remember about my brief yet profound time with Mavis and also let you know that you will always be in my thoughts and prayers. If there is anything that I can do for you, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Be well,

Terry Gaskins

Greg, Martin and Shannon,

It's kind of amazing, really, how well you can get to know somebody just sitting next to them in the bleachers. I rarely had a conversation with Mavis that didn't take place in a gym before, during or after one of Martin's AAU games, but talking with her, and observing how she reacted to her children, and seeing how they reacted to her, told me all I needed to know about the richness of her character and the depth of her love for her family. She was a very special person who helped make those long basketball weekends a very happy memory for all of us.

What's that old Bible passage -- "By their fruits shall you know them"? To take the measure of Mavis, I look no further than her magnificent son and daughter. We'll miss her terribly, but there's comfort in knowing that her gentle, caring spirit lives on in all of you.

You're all in our prayers.

I never had a small conversation with Mavis. The talk was about her hopes for Shannon and Martin, her love for Greg and her sadness at having to leave New Orleans. I also never had a sad conversation with her--her sharp wit made us laugh out loud. I remember her surprising Shannon, William and Mary Martin on their DC trip in 7th grade and laughing at their shocked faces as she chased after them boarding the tour bus. Martin's text messages were a source of delight, no matter how many times she took the cell phone away. Most importantly, Greg was the love of her life. As much as we celebrate her life, we grieve for Greg, Shannon and Martin. Our prayers are with them and all of Mavis's extended family.
