Meffre Matta Obituary

Dr. Meffre Matta died on Friday, May 30, 2003. He was 86 years old. Dr. Matta was born in Baton Rouge and moved to Metairie after graduation from Loyola University Dental School in 1941. He lived in Metairie where he had a private dental practice and was also on the faculty of LSU Dental School as a full professor. Dr. Matta was one of the 15 original founders of the New Orleans Dental conference in 1948. He was a member of OKU and Delta Sigma Delta Delta dental fraternities. He was also past president of both the New Orleans Dental Association and the Louisiana Dental Association. Dr. Matta was a life member of the American College of Dentistry. In 1990 the LDA bestowed the title of Fellow in honor of his work on behalf of dentistry. In 1998 he received the Pierre Fauchard Academy Distinguished Dentist Award for a lifetime devoted to the advancement of dentistry. Dr. Matta was an active member of Munholland United Methodist Church and a long time volunteer at East Jefferson General Hospital. He is survived by: his wife, Shirley Van Lue Matta; his daughter, Margaret Bonner of Houston; his sons, John of Philadelphia and Steve of Marietta, GA; and eight grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Service at Munholland United Methodist Church, 1201 Metairie Road on Sunday, June 8, 2003 at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Methodist Children's Home, P.O. Box 929, Ruston, LA 71273-9976. LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.
