Melinda Martin Obituary
Dr. Melinda Bartley Martin, professor, former administrator, died Sunday of heart failure at Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital in New Orleans. She was 54. Dr. Martin was born in Morgan City and lived in New Orleans for the last 24 years. She was a graduate of Sumpter Williams High School of Morgan City and received a bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern University at Baton Rouge, and a second master's and doctorate in education from George Washington University. She also studied at Harvard University. Dr. Martin was a member of Greater Liberty Baptist Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She served as a board member of the Urban League of Greater New Orleans National Council of Negro Women, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southeast Louisiana, Dryades Street YMCA, and Greater Liberty Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Hazel Smith Bartley Jr. Wife of Lawrence Marten, Step-mother of Lynette Martin. Sister of Melvin (Gertrude) Bartley of Morgan City, Herbert Bartley of Baton Rouge and Frank (Janice) Bartley III of New Orleans, Celia B. (Thornton) Clark of Baton Rouge, Audrey B. (Roland) Merchant of Agoura Hills, CA., Lorraine B. Myers of Holland, OH., Laura B. Marshall of Morgan City, LA., Ruby B. Sanchez and Gloria B. (Calhoun) Moultric both of New Orleans, and the late Huey and Jacqueline Bartley. Sister-in-law of Brenda H. Bartley and Myra M. Thomas, and the late Murphy Sanchez and Arvel Marshall. Niece of Herolne Simmons, Lovenia Goods, Marguarite Hartman, and Elton Hayes, and the late Ezekiel Simmons, Leon Hartman, Calvin Bartley, Marion Hayes, Melinda Brown, Virginia Robinson and Margaret Bartley. Aunt of a host of nephews and nieces. Godmother of several children. Relatives and friends of the family, also members of Greater Liberty Baptist Church, Delta Sigma Theta New Orleans Alumnac Chapter, and the Southern University at New Orleans family, are invited to attend the funeral at Dillard University (Dr. Calvin Wood, Pastor Greater Liberty Baptist Church, officiating) on Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at 12:00 noon. Viewing will be 8:00 a.m. until service. Omega Omega service at 11:00 a.m. Interment Mount Olivet Cemetery, New Orleans. Arrangements are entrusted to Rhodes Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers contributions may made to the Frank and Hazel Smith Bartley, Jr. Scholarship Fund, Southern University at New Orleans. Arrangements by D. W.
