Michael James Obituary

On November 20, 2020, Michael George James, 71, of Metairie, Louisiana went to be with the Lord with his wife, Melanie, of 39 years by his side. Mike was born on February 16, 1949 in Fukuoaka, Japan to retired Army Major George R. James and Dorothy Iman James. He comes from an extraordinary family, as the James' are direct descendants of the pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower and the Imans are descendants of the pioneers who arrived in the Oregon Territories by wagon train in the mid 1800's. Mike was a young boy when his family left Japan and settled in Washington state, where he had an exciting childhood that ignited in him a passion for adventure. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout as a teenager and began a remarkable career in deep sea diving in his early 20's, with his first job performing salvage work in Egypt as part of the Suez Canal Clearance project. In 1981, he married Melanie (Melito), who shared his love for life, travel, and adventure. After 20 years of deep sea diving, Mike and his closest friend, a fellow diver, founded a successful maritime business, Magellan Marine International, in 1993. Mike was truly a man of many talents and interests. He lived life to the fullest, had unlimited energy, and never missed an opportunity to explore new places or ideas. An outstanding individual, he was charismatic, extraordinarily generous, loyal, and most of all, authentic. One of a kind, loved by all who knew him, Mike's zest for life, enthusiasm, willingness to help anyone anytime, and compassion he had for all in need was without equal. A 21st Century "Renaissance Man" who embodied the characteristics of knowledge and goodness, he challenged others to think for themselves and form their own opinions. Above all, Mike's spirit is best described by Romans 12:10, "Be devoted to one another in brotherly love, esteeming one another in honor." Mike is survived by his wife, Melanie. He is also survived by his brother, Randy James; nephew, Miles James and his daughter Phoebe; his in-laws, Larry, Paula (Jimmy), Michael (Mary), and Gina (Juan); and numerous nieces and nephews. His entire family adored and highly respected him. The family will hold a private memorial in celebration of his life. Arrangements by L. A. Muhleisen & Son Funeral Home. Mike was a tough guy, a real man’s man, was a hard hat, deep sea diver for roughly 20 years before moving on & starting his own company “Magellan Marine” where he organized various offshore projects such as salvage jobs of deep sea rigs moved off their platforms due to powerful hurricanes or inspecting rigs out in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, or dredging the sea bottom for Lord knows what etc...

He had lots of interesting stories like this one time a large Manta ray swam into his air & safety line dragging him through the water like a rag doll before it finally, miraculously came free of his lines.

Who could ever top a story like that? Why would you even try?

Mike was a master of the “grill” & knew how to cook up vittles proper: steak, pork chops, chicken, sausage... Now this last item “sausage” I do believe he had quite an obsession with.

Once he purchased his beloved “green egg” it was on pecan & his favorite thing to cook in that thing was sausage.

I don’t believe I’ve ever been to one of Mike & Me Me’s get together’s (at the big “A” frame) in Magnolia, Ms without my choice of at least 4-5 different types of sausage, slow cooked to perfection of course in that green egg of his to go along with all the other abundantly good offerings they always had.

I don’t believe anyone ever left there with at least one plate of food to munch on for later on.

Mike & Me Me always made sure there was plenty of good food to go around & that everyone who came had a good time.

Of all the wonderful stories & great times we shared I believe more than anything I will forever remember Mike for his kind & generous nature & the love he had for his family but most importantly his love for my beloved aunt Melanie “Me Me.”

My aunt Me Me & I are very close you see, she has always been more than a special person in my life & to know Mike loved her & took care of her like no other for more than 40 years of their lives, in my eyes & in my heart Mike will always be golden.

It was such a pleasure having you in our lives Mike, you will always be remembered, revered & loved & thank you for loving & caring for my wonderful aunt Me Me.

Rest In Peace Mike, you will always be in our hearts & in our minds, we will always cherish the impact you had on our lives.

I met Mike over twenty years ago. He was the kind of fellow you take to immediately. Soft spoken, smart and an easy laugh. The more I learned about him, and his work history, the more I admired his courage and ability. I’ll miss you Mike. You’re a good friend and a very good man.

Mike was one of the finest people I’ve ever known. His integrity was above reproach. I was fortunate enough to experience his love and kindness for 39 years. You were one of a kind, Mike James. I am grateful for many fond memories shared with you and Melanie. I’ll never forget you singing “Zorro” to my then four year old daughter. Priceless. Rest easy my friend. I’ll see you on the other side.
