I studied art under Mike Willmon many years ago. He was patient, kind, and always encouraging. A few days ago, I heard a song by Roxy Music, and was instantly transported back to 1985, sitting and drawing in Mike's class at New Orleans Art Institute in a room full of aspiring artists. Mike always had music on as we worked. Bryan Ferry seemed to be the soundtrack at the time. I hadn't heard of Mike's passing. I just happened to think about him and decided to look him up. I've been a teacher now for over thirty years. I remember Mike's gentle style as I work with my young art students, and try to foster the peaceful, flowing environment he created in his class. Thank you Mike for helping a shy kid to open up and realize his potential. I can only hope to be half the teacher and artist you were.
God Bless,

Mike was my art teacher when I got out of high school. He had an art school on Magazine. I remember him playing Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young while the class painted. I just did a search out of the blue to look at his work online and saw that he had passed. So sorry to hear this.
