He was born on July 18, 1927 in Fayette MS and was always proud of his family's distinguished heritage in that area since before statehood. He was preceded in death by his parents Norman B. Gillis, Sr. and Katie Lewis Gillis, daughter Patricia Kay and brother Sterling. He was associate editor of the Mississippi Law Journal, member of Phi Delta Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa, president of both Pi Kappa Alpha and Interfraternity Council. In honor of a deceased classmate he established the Fredrick P. He was one of the region's most prominent attorneys as well as a developer of commercial properties and a number of oil & gas fields. He was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States District Court, and was a member of the Mississippi, Texas and American Bar Associations. He was named King of the Junior Auxiliary Ball, and served as a Trustee of the Mississippi Museum of Art and the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. He was co-founder of Gulf South Art Galleries; developer of the Pike County Juvenile Detention Center, and for 40 years a captain at Manresa Retreat House in Convent, LA. Mr Gillis was the kindest, smartest, caring gentleman I´ve ever known. His daughter Trish was my best friend and I grew up with them for ten years. He will be greatly missed

We are deeply blessed to know and love Norman's son, Charles.Charles has been a loving friend, the brother I do not have and a phenomenal influence on my children with his gentlemanly charm, faithful integrity and loyal spirit and gifted insights. Though I was never fortunate to know Norman, I have no doubt that he was a true gentleman of honor and class if he could have and raise such a son as Charles. As a Scout myself, I know his commitment to scouting has influenced America for the better. Our deepest sympathies are with the entire Gillis family in this time of sorrow. With love, Jacquelyn Burt-Tanzola,Frank Tanzola, 1st Lt. Alexandra Leigh Tanzola and Harrison Jack Tanzola

It is sad to me when a warrior for Social Justice dies. I am thankful that Norman, as a man of power and privilege showed the integrity and courage to stand for people without power. I hope those who love him are consoled by the respect I have for him, and his work. I am sharing my thoughts with the house of worship I attend, namely The Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco, CA. In 1978 I was a Southern Baptist Summer Missionary at Ross Barnett Reservoir in Brandon MS. I don't recall why Mr Gillis was there for several weeks that Summer but I am grateful he was. At19 years old I was in over my head given the task of planning
Sunday Camp worship for vacationers, I was a Music Major at Eastern Illinois University I had never planned a service all alone before. Norman taught me how to do it and shared a devotional that made me remember him 40 years later. Thank you Norman.
