Oscar Johnson Obituary
Oscar Johnson Jr. entered into the Lord's eternal rest on Wednesday, May 3, 2023. Born on August 15, 1926, in Tickfaw, Louisiana, Oscar met his future wife Gloria Green Johnson at a friend's wedding, and they began dating. After graduating high school in Tickfaw, he joined the Army and served his country with honor and recognition in the Philippines. Upon returning from military service, he married Gloria, and they raised their seven children, Beverly, Gloria, Brenda, Cynthia, Sheila, Vanessa, and Oscar III, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Oscar had a very diverse career in business, education, and transportation. He worked as a Specialist at Flintkote Company in New Orleans for several years. He drove a taxi for Logan Cab Company and Jet Cab Company. He became a Licensed Electrician and owned his own electrical company, Oscar Johnson and Son, for over 50 years. In addition, Oscar was a Lecturer at Delgado Community College and a Visiting Lecturer at Lawless Jr. High School. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Freemasons. Family and community were the highest priorities for Oscar. He enjoyed bringing his family to the Flintkote company picnics, and taking his grandchildren to the circus and Harlem Globetrotter games. He always remembered every child's birthday and Christmas with a gift. He and his friend Mr. Huey P. Collins would take the neighborhood kids to Lincoln Park for swimming and rides. He was generous with his time and skills as well as would help anyone with electrical needs even if they could not pay. Oscar was a deeply spiritual man who was active in church. He was baptized in childhood in Tickfaw, Louisiana and recommitted himself to Christ by being baptized again as an adult at Greater New Home Missionary Baptist Church. He remained a faithful Christian for the rest of his life and served as a Deacon at Greater New Home Missionary Baptist Church. He is survived by his children, Beverly A. Johnson, Gloria D. Johnson (Claude), Brenda J. Ashford (Alton, Ronald), and Cynthia J. Carriere (Richard); 12 grandchildren, Samoan, Claude, Yashika, Oscar IV, Alton Jr., Bernadette, Tony, Joshua, Kelly, Marvin, Rolanda, Roderick, and Yasmin; and 11 great-grandchildren, Claude III, Dekota, Elijah, Ezra, Aniya, Alton III, Aiden, Brooke, Emma, Paisley, and Tylen, as well as a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Blanch "Dinky" Johnson and Oscar Johnson Sr.; his four siblings Benjamin Landry, Lucy Landry, Hannidle Julien, and Lorenza Johnson; his beloved wife, Gloria Green Johnson; daughters Sheila J. Duroncelet and Vanessa J. Glover; and son Oscar Johnson III. Oscar was devoted to his family and friends, his community, his country, and his Lord, and will be deeply missed. Oscar's relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service on Friday, May 19, 2023, at 11 am at Greater New Home Baptist Church, 6420 Roder St., New Orleans, LA 70117. Viewing will be held from 10 am until service time. Interment: Southeast Veterans Cemetery, Slidell, LA. Visitation will be held from Thursday, May 18, 2023, from 3 pm to 5 pm at Bardell's Mortuary, 3856 LA 44, Mt. Airy, LA 70076. Services entrusted to Bardell's Mortuary. Information: (985) 535-6837.
