Paul Cressy Obituary

Paul Francis Cressy passed away in his home after a long battle with colon cancer August 1st, 2014. Paul was born January 13th 1969, the son of Barbara Mequet Cressy, and David and Laura Sutis Cressy. Paul was preceded in death by his mother Barbara Mequet Cressy; grandparents Helen May Groves, Edmund Michael Mequet, Louis Villere Cressy, and Nellie Sarrat Cressy. Paul is survived by his wife Sarah Stokes Cressy; children Gray Villere Cressy and Helen Frances Cressy; siblings Dr. David Cressy (Rebecca), Andree Landry (Chad), Suzanne Rabalais (Steve), Nicholas Cressy, and Jordan Cressy; nieces Micah Cressy, Hale Landry, Lucy Rabalais, and Ryann Rabalais; nephews Alex Savoie, David Landry, David Cressy, and Noah Brown; beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Paul was the center of a loving, close-knit extended family, and group of lifetime, faithful friends. Paul was gracious and kind, with an infectious spirit that will live-on in all he touched. In his writings, Paul would remind us that goodness lurks in the shadow of tragedy. His resolute courage in the face of incredible adversity will continue to serve as an inspiration to those who knew him. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, August 9th 11am at the Chapel of the North American Martyrs at Jesuit High School, 4133 Banks Street. Visitation will begin at 9am. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation, Jesuit High School, and the New Orleans Mission. Being a colon cancer survivor myself, I hate hearing about people like Paul who were less fortunate than I have been. I feel for your loss. I ran the NYC marathon in 2011 after completing my year of treatment and I'm returning this November to give cancer the finger again. Paul's involvement in Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation has inspired me to join CCCF which I did today. This November I'll be running for Paul, my friend Reid's wife, and all the others who have or are facing colon cancer.

August 14, 2014

I am sorry for your loss. I had dinner with Paul and ran the 2011 marathon with him as a member of the team. I am a colon cancer survivor and know what he went through and then to run that marathon was a true inspiration. I have thought of him often and told his story many times. My prayers are with you. Paul and I were members of the Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation New York City Marathon Team in 2011. I will never forget meeting him 2 nights before the marathon at dinner. He shared the story of his battle with us and provided unbelievable inspiration. He went on to complete the marathon with Jill at his side. I have often thought about him and his battle over the last 3 years. Such a sad lose. I am better for having met him.

Sarah, Gray, Helen and all of the Cressy family: Words cannot express the sadness I feel for your loss. Paul was one of the greatest guys I knew. He was always happy and full of energy. Even though I did not see you all that often, it was always like not a day had passed when we would visit. My heart breaks for all of you but he is going to be with you every moment now. God bless you and we love you!

Sarah, I knew Paul as Andree's little brother in high school. The Cressy's are an amazing, warm, welcoming, and kind family. I'm sure Paul possessed all of their many wonderful qualities. His strength and unrelenting optimism even in the face of adversity are lessons for us all. Wishing you peace and understanding as you go through this difficult time.

Sarah,

Paul took the time to share his journey with us through his writings. I came to know him as a thoughtful, courageous, painfully honest, and inspirational person through these writings. I'd always known Paul through Andree (we're friends from Ursuline), but his journey with cancer revealed what a truly incredible man he was. You are very much in my thoughts and prayers right now. I know that his passing is a tremendous loss to you, your family, and our community. He will be sorely missed.

I came to know Paul through our mutual friend Sean Harper. Paul played with our tennis group from time to time and I found him to be a wonderful person, always kind and considerate, a gentle soul. I lost my best friend a few years ago to colon cancer and therefore feel a unique connection with Paul in this way. I will never forget Paul and now when I think of my best friend I will think of him also.

Sarah, I attended a Holy Cross and knew Paul through mutual friends and athletics. Paul was always a happy and friendly person. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Rick David

Paul and I have not seen a lot of each other since the Jesuit and college years. Since that time I've had the privilege of meeting some very special people along the way and right or wrong I've always measured/compared those people to a few folks I grew up with. Paul is one of those few. He made a lasting impact on me about what being a friend is all about. He is one of the most generous, fun-loving, warm, and kindhearted people I have ever known. The world just ain't as bright right now knowing that Paul Cressy has left it.

Paul and his Son Gray came to see me at work earlier in the year. he seemed fine and excited to show his Gray all the new Porsches. I loaded him up with Porsche swag at the time and now I'm just glad that I was lucky enough to have seen him and spent that short time with him, one last time. He will live on in Heaven and Gray is welcome here anytime he wants to visit with the cars.
