Paul Dietzel Obituary

Coach Paul F. Dietzel went home to be with our Lord on Tuesday, September 24, 2013. He was born in Fremont, Ohio on September 5, 1924. Our family has lost a humble leader, loving dad and granddad; the world of athletics has lost a visionary and gridiron legend. Those of us who have been blessed to live along side, work or play for Coach have lost a caring friend, an uplifting mentor and a man of God. Coach passed away peacefully and is at his heavenly home. He leaves behind his dear wife, Anne; daughter, Kathie DuTremble; son, Steve Dietzel; daughter-in-law, Judy Dietzel; grandsons, David DuTremble and Paul Dietzel II; and countless athletes through the decades that Coach considered his own. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 27, 2013 at First United Methodist Church, 930 North Blvd., from 9 am until religious service at 11 am. Coach asked that in place of flowers that gifts be made to the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter in Baton Rouge, P.O. 14559 Baton Rouge, LA 70898 or online at http://fcabr.org/donate. The contact for FCA is Andy Stroup. Please visit www.resthavenbatonrouge.com to sign the online guestbook. Resthaven Gardens of Memory & Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

a great coach has left us. Paul was successful with many teams through his career. I can remember when he coached LSU and had a Heisman trophy winner on his team. Billy Cannon. he was a great leader of men when he coached at army. well now he is coaching a much greater team now. I pray that our loving savior will grant peace and comfort to the coaches family during this time of sorrow. may you rest in peace coach.

October 2, 2013

Ann and Family, Every aspect of our backgrounds were totally opposite from each other, but from the first moment I met Paul at our Bible Study, I had a full sense of who he was as a man, as a Christian, and he responded to me in kind. I have never known any one like him, and don't expect ever to know such a man again. He taught me that in the Holy Spirit opposites may attract and abide with each other in fellowship. David Madden

Ann and family,

The loss of Coach will leave a great void in your life I know, but I know also that he leaves you with many memories that will bring you comfort in the days ahead. Over the years I have met many who bear the title of coach, but I know of no one who carried the title better than Coach Dietzel. A true gentleman that brought honor, integrity, and a love and respect for others to our profession.
It was a true honor to be in his presence.

Our hearts break with yours and our prayers go with you as you move through the days ahead. May the God of all comfort hold you close.

My sincere condolences to the Dietzel family. I had been a fan of Coach Dietzel for many years not only for my love of football and what he meant to the game but also for the fact that my lifelong friend, Larry Jones Who had served on his staff on several occasions always had great things to say about Coach Dietzel. When I attended the service for Larry in Baton Rouge this year I had a chance to meet Coach Dietzel in person, what a joy to meet someone for the first time but felt as if I had known him for years through my friend. May God's blessings be with his family.

I first met Coach Dietzel when he was my huddle coach at FCA camp in 1965. I will never forget the lessons he taught us. I went into coaching for almost 20 years after college, and I hope that I was as inspirational to my players as he was to us. He brought me closer to God and coaching. Rest In Peace Coach. This is Howard Luppi again. Sorry about the Class date of 1848 instead of 1948. Sometimes I feel like I may have graduated on that date. Paul and I were just a few days apart in birthdays. I was born August 27, 1924. Again, my apologies. Howard Luppi

I am very sad for you Mrs. Anne and your family on Coach going to see our COACH in the Heavens. I did enjoy the time talking to him when I helped in getting the squirrels out of the attic a few years back. I can honestly say that coach always found the good things in life to talk about and that was great. He was also able to tell me every story that went with his collection of pictures in your home. I know that he will be missed by all that he touch but we all are better people because of him and I thank you for that.

I am deeply saddened to hear the passing of Coach Dietzel. I had the privilege of being coached by him for 4 years at South Carolina. I always looked forward to his talks to us the evening before our games. the messages challenged us to think about how to live our lives as much as they were about the game the next day. I had the opportunity to play golf with General Westmorland a few times and I enjoyed his story about his conversation with President Kennedy concerning the West Point football team. President Kennedy asked General Westmorland "What are you going to do about the football team?" Mr. President, what would you like for me to do? Find and Hire the best football coach in the country. I hired Coach Paul Dietzel. Coach Dietzel will be missed but his influence will remain with me the rest of my life.

September 24, 2013

Greg & Rosanne Black, Marion, SC
Coach Dietzel was a fine Christian man who I had the honor of playing for at Carolina for 5 years, during which I can not recall once hearing or seeing anything in him which led me to doubt his Christian testimony. That to me spoke to the character of the man which in the game of life counts more than one's record of wins and losses. Yet he had his share of wins, even today he is the only USC head football coach to record a conference championship, a fact I hope Coach Spurrier changes this year. Yet Coach Dietzel's influence at Carolina goes way beyond all that for he truly laid the groundwork for the facilities which have been built upon by Coaches Holtz and Spurrier. My condolences go out to his family.

As a lifelong Gamecock and 20+ year resident of the High Country of North Carolina (Beech Mountain) I seem to have always had a connection with Coach Dietzel. He did so much for the University and Columbia as a whole. Later he was a vibrant part of the Beech Mountain community where some of his art still hangs for sale in Fred's General Mercantile. I have always enjoyed knowing that Coach was a part of "both of my favorite places to be" - Columbia, South Carolina and Beech Mountain, North Carolina.

Rest in Peace, Coach. Prayers for the family.

In 1969 I was a new employee of the South Carolina National Bank. My department had several USC students working part time and they referred to coach Dietzel as Pepsident Paul. They loved him and I think, at the time, he was the King of Columbia, South Carolina. He was an extraordinary person.
