Peter Chan Obituary

Peter Chan, age 74, of Slidell, LA passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2022. He was born on June 5, 1947, in what was formerly known as Saigon, Vietnam. Peter is preceded in death by his mother Muoi Ha and his father Nghieu Tran. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Kathy, and his son Michael. He is also survived by two brothers, Andersen and Felip Chan, his sister Leching Chan, half sisters, nieces, a nephew, and cousins. Peter was born on June 5th, 1947, to his mother Muoi Ha and his father Nghieu Tran. Shortly after turning 18 years old, he joined the South Vietnamese Navy, became a boat captain, and fought alongside the U.S. military forces, so that Vietnam could remain a free and democratic nation. After Vietnam fell to the Communist Party in 1975, he came to America. He started his first job as a chef, and after working in various Chinese restaurants across the country he developed his own cooking style and cuisine and embarked on a lifelong career as a chef. He owned two restaurants in Slidell, LA, which are a testament to his perseverance and hard work. He was a phenomenal chef and when we talked to former customers they would always say "we wish your restaurant was still open" and asked for his recipes for the food he served at the restaurant. He came from humble beginnings and was able to accomplish a lot of the goals he set for himself and left a lasting legacy for his family and in his community. In 1979, Peter met Kathy in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Peter and Kathy went on to have one child, Michael. In 2010, Peter retired and sold Chinatown Restaurant and spent his time gardening, working on projects at his home and being a devoted father and husband. Peter loved to make others laugh, considered everybody else's needs before his own, and never hesitated to help others. He gave generously of his time and kindness. Because he was a big kid at heart, his nieces and nephews adored him along with the children of his close friends. A visitation will be held at Grace Funeral Home, 450 Holy Trinity Drive, Covington, LA 70433 on Thursday, May 5, 2022, beginning at 5:00 PM. A celebration of his life will take place on Friday, May 6, 2022, at Grace Funeral Home at 10:00 AM. Words of Remembrance will begin at 11:00 AM followed by the funeral service at 12:00 PM. Interment will follow the service in St. Lazarus of Bethany Memorial Gardens adjacent to Grace Funeral Home. An online guestbook is available at www.gracenorthshore.com.
