Dr. Raul Gregorio Reyes

Dr. Raul Gregorio Reyes passed away at Ochsner Medical Center on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the age of 88. He was born on June 18, 1928 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He attended Escuela Republica de Chile in Puero Cortes, Honduras. At the age of 11, speaking only Spanish, he traveled to the United States by boat to attend Holy Cross boarding school. He attained his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University. When he was 22 years old he received his medical degree from George Washington University. His internship and general surgery residency were completed at Louisiana State University, Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Additionally, he completed a general surgery residency at George Washington University Hospital. In 1955, he began his medical practice in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. From 1956 until the time of his death, he practiced in the New Orleans area. He was a member of the Orleans Parish Medical Society, Louisiana State Medical Society, American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, and the New Orleans Surgical Society. He also served on the faculty of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. Dr. Reyes was an honorary citizen of New Orleans and served as the Honorary Consul of Honduras. He was a founding member of the Honduran Association of New Orleans and served as the president for many years. He was a passionate art and book collector and greatly enjoyed opera, classical music and traveling. He was preceded in death by his parents Gregorio Reyes and Ofelia Reyes; a sister, Norma Reyes Bogran; the mother of his children, Mildred Dane Smith Reyes. He is survived by his wife, Blanca Lila Reyes; a brother Roberto Reyes; a sister, Sandra Reyes; two daughters, Tyra Huval (William) and Kimberly Simpson (William); two stepsons, Javier Guevara (Viviana) and Christian Guevara; six grandchildren, Rebecca Huval, Brody Huval, Brittany Simpson Baxter (Paul) and Blakeley Simpson Oranburg (Scott), Alejandro Guevara and Ariana Guevara. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering at L. A.
