Raymond Campos Obituary

Raymond A. Campos, best known as DJ Ray, passed away on Saturday, December 23, 2023, at 78 years old. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on April 29, 1945, to Luis A. Campos and Dorothy Campos Naquin. He was a proud New Orleanian and loved to brag about his city's uniqueness and culture. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Celestino "Sal" Campos, and his best friend of over 60 years, Steve "Bop" Williams. Raymond leaves behind to cherish his memory his two children; Michael A. Campos and Rayna L. Campos, as well as his seven siblings; Louis A. Campos (Carol), Judith O'Leary (the late Jerry), James Campos, Alphonso Campos (Karen), Wilfred Campos (Kerry), Anthony Naquin (Vickie), and Dorothy Naquin Guidry (Shannon), along with several nieces and nephews. Two of Raymond's greatest loves were music and Mardi Gras. He DJ'd for many years and brought happiness to all who listened. DJ Ray was also on air with Doowopradio4U for many years. His love for Mardi Gras was well known. He was a member of the Corner Club Marching Club from 1961 to 2023. He never missed a march. Raymond was a hard worker and the owner of Technical Solutions LLC. Besides his zest for music and Mardi Gras, his greatest love was his family. He was and always will be an amazing father and brother. He will be greatly missed. In Raymond's tradition, there will be a second-line procession following the mass. The family asks that you wear Mardi Gras colors in honor of his final march. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd, New Orleans, on Saturday, January 6, 2024, starting at 10:00 AM, followed by Catholic Services in the Chapel at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. The family invites you to share your thoughts, fond memories, and condolences online, at www.greenwoodfh.com

Raymond became a dear friend to me over the last 8 years. He had a passion for everything he did, or else he didn´t do it! (lovingly stubborn and a man of conviction-which he never hesitated to discuss or debate with an engaging party). Raymond tried to spread his love for music among everyone who knew him. He loved introducing new tunes to people and I, for one, learned a great deal from him and gained a new appreciation for certain genres of music. Music to him was more than a collection of notes-it was an expression of feeling that exuded from the heart and soul. I enjoyed hearing him reminisce about what age he was and where he was when he first heard an old song. Then he´d run out the next day and buy himself that 45 and play it endlessly while sitting on the living room floor. Raymond wasn´t interested in researching his ancestry-he was unquestionably an American (from New Orleans!!!). No need for any other labels as far as he was concerned. None of us will experience another Mardi Gras without thinking of Raymond. He is forever part of us, and I feel fortunate to say so. He and I shared our politics and spent the last two presidential elections texting. I´ll miss that this year.
