Raymond St. Pierre Obituary

Raymond Ronald St. Pierre, age 78 years and resident of Marrero, LA, passed away July 29, 2017 at 6:49 p.m. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on March 8, 1939, only child of Lawrence Joseph St.Pierre of Paulina, LA and Doris Martin St.Pierre of Lutcher, LA. He was predeceased by his parents, and his son (John Lawrence St.Pierre). He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce Folse St. Pierre of Raceland, his sons David St. Pierre (Jan), and Mark St. Pierre (Stacey). He was the grandfather of Collin, Samantha, and Britton St. Pierre. Ray served our country and community as a teacher and coach for more than five decades. His career started in the US Army achieving the rank of lieutenant (1961 – 1968). He went on to complete a bachelor's degree in education at the University of Southern Mississippi, a Master's degree from the University of Houston, and his administrative required course training (+30) from Southeastern State University. During this time, he and his wife, also a school teacher, raised a family in Jefferson Parish. Ray's passion in the classroom and on the football field carries on through the lives of his students. A devoted fan of football, he received a football scholarship at the University of Southern Mississippi where he played for 4 years while winning the UPI National Football Championship in 1958. He was also named an All American by the National Football Rating System. Ray coached at Mt. Carmel High School (Houston, Texas, - 1964 – 1972), Redemptorist High School ( New Orleans, LA – 1972), West Jefferson High School (Harvey, LA – 1973-1978), and John Ehret High School (Marrero, LA – 1978 – 1986). He went on to win two state football championships. One championship in 1981 as a Defensive Coordinator and another in 1985 as Head Coach at John Ehret High School. In 1996, he was appointed as the Assistant Principal of Truman Middle School in Marrero. Later, in 1998, he was overwhelmingly elected to the Jefferson Parish School Board. He went on to serve as School Board President and Vice-President and was re-elected to represent District 3 in 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014. There is something special about an educator who makes such an impression on former students. What is more impressive is that students continue to hold their former teacher in high regard. Mr. St.Pierre is highly recognized by former students as a devoted educator, trusted friend, demanding coach, and most of all a compassionate listener. Above all, he was passionately devoted to his family, and took great joy in teaching his children and grandchildren. Relatives and Friends of the Family are invited to attend the Funeral Service at 1:30 PM in the Chapel of MOTHE FUNERAL HOME, 7040 Lapalco Blvd., Marrero, LA on Saturday, August 5, 2017. Interment Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Gretna, LA. Visitation will be held Saturday morning from 9 AM until 1:30 PM. To view and sign the online memorial guestbook visit www.mothefunerals.com

Mr. Ray was a very good man, He was a very friendly and well-rounded man. Mr. Ray was the Rep. for my district, though I have worked in different schools with other Reps. Mr. Ray was always helpful to my husband (Wes) and I when we needed him. He was accommodating to the needs of our community. I've been in the school system for many years and have known many Board members, but Mr. Ray will be sadly missed. To the St. Pierre family, our prayers are with you all and Mr. Ray. God Bless you all.

To the family of Ray St.Pierre, I was sorry to hear about your loss, but the Jefferson Parish School System also lost a tremendous person. I was very fortunate to have Mr. St. Pierre as my assistant principal at Truman. We would always talk about his championship at Ehret. Being the girls basketball coach at Ehret, I would always tell him one day we would get one too. When we did, I think he was just as excited as our team was. He was a class act, a very loving, caring, and devoted person. Ray I love you, and thanks for the memories we shared.

Joyce, I was at a meeting with Ray last year and, knowing you had been having some health problems around that time, I asked how you were doing. It was several months ago, so this is not an exact quote, but it carries the gist of it. He said, "Well, we have a problem here," pointing to his chest," but we believe we'll get through it." He went on explaining, always referring to your physical problems as "we" or "our" issue. I was deeply touched that he referred to your illness as his. It was a sincere, honest depiction of his love for you.
He was a dear friend and will be sorely missed.

Ms. Joyce, I knew something was wrong when
Coach didn't come in for his hair cut. My dad told me he was in the hospital and not doing well. He was in my prayers. I will dearly miss him coming in the shop. Anytime one of his former students would see him in the shop they had nothing but great things to say about him. Some of them say that they turned out so well becouse of him. The school system has lost such a great fighter for the students and teachers.
You are all in our thoughts and prayers
