Robert Mayfield Obituary

Dr. Robert von Elm Mayfield passed away on July 19th, 2015. He was born in Laurel, Mississippi to George Udell Mayfield, Sr. and Norma Brinks Mayfield. An alumna of George S. Gardner High School in Laurel, Mississippi, Bob attended Texas A & M University. After a tour of duty with the United States Army, he graduated from Ole Miss. He received his doctor of medicine degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. After practicing some time in Mississippi, Dr. Mayfield relocated to Chalmette, Louisiana, where he practiced medicine for 45 years before retiring in 1998. Dr. Mayfield was a member of the St. Bernard Parish Medical Society and served a term as president of the St. Bernard General Hospital medical staff. Bob was an avid model airplane and railroad enthusiast as well as a gifted woodworker . He is preceded in death by his brother, George Udell Mayfield, Jr. Bob is survived by his wife of 47 years, Helen Garin Mayfield, daughter Anne Mayfield Fritsch (John) and sons Dr. Sean G. Mayfield (Heather) and Michael P. Mayfield (Jennifer). Survivors also include Kim and Robert M. Mayfield. Bob leaves behind seven adored grandchildren: Caroline and Christian Fritsch, Garin, Hunter, Lilian and Beatris Mayfield and Amelia Mayfield. He will be sorely missed by his yellow lab, Molly. Friends of the family are invited to attend a memorial Mass on Monday, August 3rd at 1:00 p.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home Chapel located at 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, Louisiana 70006. Private inurnment to follow. Masses preferred in lieu of flowers. Condolences may be offered online at www.leitzeaganfuneralhome.com.

Bob was a very good man and always kind to me. I will never forget his trains and the wonderful love he had for his wife and kids. God just welcomed one of the last true Southern gentlemen. Thanks Bob for never being anything but nice to me and my son, Peter. Paw Paw really liked you also! Kids, your dad was soooo proud of you. He beamed whenever he talked about you. Helen, you were the love of his life and he said to me once that he thanked God for you everyday
