Robert Wells Obituary

Robert Wells, III was born in St. Bernard Parish, October 9, 1997 to Robert Wells, Jr. and Deborah Wells. He spent the years after hurricane Katrina in the St. Charles Parish area until his murder on Sunday, February 16, 2020. As loving parents, we were not prepared for the untimely, tragic death of our young son He was a wonderful, funny, intelligent, talented and compassionate young man until the false desires of fast money and instant gratification lured him away from the morals and ethics instilled in him from a young age. Tough Love did not deter his mindset to stay involved in the streets. We always hoped that one day his parents' Love and commitment to him would prevail and he would abandon that life. It did not. His life ended almost instantly at 22 years old, alone in a car under a barrage of gunfire. All the fast money, cars and "things" that seemingly were of importance to him, meant nothing at his crossing. We hope and pray that Robert never bestowed this kind of senseless violence upon anyone else's child, and if this obituary can offer the opportunity for another young person to realize the streets offer nothing but heartache, pain, and ultimately death, Robert's life will not have been in vain. His pained soul is now set free from all worldly desires. Dear God, please take our son, the most precious gift you could bestow upon us at his birth, back once again as your Heavenly son. Lord, keep him in your loving arms for eternity and, forgive us. Robert was predeceased by his grandparents Robert and Bertha Wells, Sr. and George H. Dupard, Sr., Ingeborg Thurston (Richard). He leaves behind a brother, Antonio, girlfriend Hailey, and many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. There will be no service for Robert. Instead we kindly ask you to make a small donation in his name to any at-risk youth programs. Until we meet again Son, you'll forever be in our hearts.

I don't know your son or your family. I am however a parent and a parent who has lost a child at the tender age of 18. I raised her child who is now 27. She tells me all the time how us raising her showed her love beyond measure. This is what you gave your son love beyond measure. God holds a special place for parents like you. You gave selflessly to your son and it is sad he didn't make it back before tragedy struck and took his like. My hope is as you go through your life you will know and feel the Lord touching every fiber of your being comforting you in this time of pain you cannot describe. Remember your son in all his good deeds and acts not remembering the lost soul in the last times of his life. Your truth and willingness to share with all those around you and him. Remember the good and great child. That is the child you will see again. Jesus will hold him dear until you meet again and embrace once again the love you raised. I know you don't know me but your story of love and your young man truly moved me. I pray for you and your family. In God's peace and love

Mr. & Mrs. Wells and Family,
As I read Robert's obituary, I felt your pain, grief, and unconditional love for him. Your words touched my heart, as I'm sure they touched the hearts of every person who has read them. Your son is back with his Heavenly Father, safe and at peace. I will keep your family in my prayers as you walk through this terrible time. May the angels surround you and your family with love and light.

March 9, 2020

Mr & Mrs Wells, I took what you wrote and shared it with 28 young people age 15-17 in a Sunday school class. What you shared WILL HELP SOMEONE'S SON AND DAUGHTER. It was not in vain and I am joining many people in praying for God to heal your broken heart. It is not easy being a parent however your journey did not end with the death of your son, but it now begins anew as you reach out and help others as you did with the obituary of your son Robert Wells, III. The students each read what you wrote aloud. We asked them to take it home and share it with their parents, grandparents, guardian, and their friends. You are beyond brave to share your pain to help another parent and their child. May you continue to trust in God.

March 8, 2020

The Power of Truth. I pray that you are able to receive the Grace and Peace the King of Kings and the Lord of Lord's has made available to you. Thank you for your courage to speak out. I do not know what it cost you, but thank you... Blessings to you and your family...

I am showing your message to my children today. May the sorrow and thoughtfulness of your message fall on listening ears so other youth may not take a misguided path or straighten their ways if they already have, and so other parents are spared the heartache and sadness you are going through due to your son's untimely death. God is love and is forgiving; may Robert be allowed in the presence of God and repent from the path he chose in life.

CS Lewis wrote "Nobody told me Grief felt so much like fear". When people die tragically, especially young we who love them have in our grief, to confront our fear of facing life without them, fear we should have done something different and even the fear that no matter what we would have done this loss might have been inevitable in an unfair world which is hard on the rowdy, the rough, the sad and seeking.

I'm a stranger to your family, who for some reasons, some of worth and some not, people seem to listen to. I applaud your courage and your candor because this message is something so many people need to hear. Your loss is the loss of the world for we are born essential, because the world needs our specific gifts. Hopefully somebody's son who is struggling to find their place in a world which values things so highly as false indications of worth or who is feeling pressures it seems hard to resist or even who feels motivated to things out of a place of fear or need for belonging, reads your eloquent message of profound grief and decides to spare the people who love them a similar loss. Your bravery has moved me and moved others because we are all flawed, and in death we deserve to be remembered honestly for all we gave and even for the ways we fell short.

In sadness for your loss, C

I lost my son to the streets, his body gave out after years of drug abuse. Like your son, he was raised by loving parents who modeled good behavior. You are very brave to share Robert's story in hope that someone else will read it and take heed. Your grief journey has just begun, but eventually, like me, your mind will clear and you will remeber him with joy instead of pain. Peace and love to you and your family.

Frances Robinson

February 29, 2020

I lost an adult child. I know you're not going to believe this, Ms. Wells, at least maybe not now, but you had nothing to do with Robert's life, at least to this extent: once a child starts school, we lost more and more influence every year. Secondly, every person has their own lives, their own souls, their own destinies. We do that best we can and then we must leave the rest up to God. Which is where Robert is now: in the loving arms of God.

February 29, 2020

So sorry for your loss. My prayers to you and your family. May God continue to comfort and guide you and family in this time of grief.

There are no perfect parents, but Robert's obituary demonstrates that your love for your son is endless and without boundaries...Even in Your most painful hour, you focus your efforts on protecting sons and daughters beyond your own. What a true display of authentic love. I'm so proud of your brutal honesty...because losing a child is brutal. Even in your tragic loss, you risk terrible comments and backlash in hopes of saving another child. My prayer for you is that the God within you continues to order your steps and bring you comfort that surpasses all understanding as you live in Him who offers eternal life. I have been blessed by your eloquent display of love for your son through the best obituary ever written. God bless and comfort you.
