Roy Brooks Obituary

Roy Louis Brooks, Jr. passed away peacefully on December 4, 2016 after a long battle with Parkinson's at the age of 87. He was born December 3, 1929 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Roy was the first born child of Hilda Schoen Brooks and Roy Louis Brooks, Sr. Roy married Doris (Dotty) Voorhies on August 5, 1950 and together they "lived happily ever after." There were five children born of this marriage. These children continue to be their greatest accomplishments and pride of their lives. Cindy B. Dragan, Peggy B. Metzger, Kathy B. Bee, Ginger B. Baron and the late Michael J. Brooks. Brother of Judy B. Stadler, Philip Schoen Brooks, James G. Brooks. Also survived by 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Roy's life was filled with purpose. It was about accomplishing the best of whatever he set out to do. He was born this way and nothing ever changed him. A great reward for this driving force was creating a successful business; the largest window covering company of its kind in New Orleans. In addition, he was honored to be elected the president of the Window Covering Convention of the South. He was a true outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, shrimping and camping. He shared his love of the outdoors with his family and took them camping every year when they were children. He loved sharing his passion of the outdoors with anyone who wanted to join him. He especially enjoyed the companionship of his brothers and sons-in-law. He took great pride in the honor of being a member of the Tally Ho Club; the oldest fishing and hunting club in the United States. Over the years Roy accumulated all the fun toys that allowed him to pursue his interests. He owned a farm with cattle and tractors, numerous boats for fishing, shrimping and hunting. After retirement he purchased a motor home and he and his lifetime companion, Dotty, traveled together wherever the roads would take them; be it north, south, east or west…they covered it all. Trips to Europe and Asia were also on the agenda. He missed nothing. Roy and Dotty moved to Austin, Texas after Katrina to be close to their children. Roy lived well, laughed often and loved much. He always looked for the best in others and gave the best he had. Beautiful memories were made during his life that will carry on in the lives of all who had the privilege of being part of his adventures. Those who knew him will never ever forget him. He was kind and very much a gentleman. A private memorial service was held by his family in Austin, TX. Arrangements by JACOB SCHOEN & SON FUNERAL HOME

I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Brooks' passing. I remember y'all from our Gentilly Woods days (Michael was in my class at W.C.C. Claiborne.) and my mom bringing our wooden Venetian blinds in to Brooks' to be redone. She always said it was THE ONLY place to go for that!
