Roy R. "Buck" Helms

Roy R. "Buck" Helms, 77, of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully at Mercy South Hospital on February 25, 2002. Buck, nicknamed by his grandfather, was born in Charlotte on November 12, 1924. He was the son of Roxie Green Helms and B.L. Helms. He spent his childhood in North Charlotte and graduated from Derita High School. His high school days included playing on baseball and basketball teams. He served in the US Navy during WWII. Buck was employed by the US Postal Service at the main downtown office, where he met Margaret Edith Reid, a secretary. Buck and Margaret were married on May 2, 1946. Buck was a member of Steele Creek Presbyterian Church and the Community Bible Sunday School Class. He served the church as a Deacon and Elder. He was an active member of American Legion Post 221.
Buck was an avid sports fan, enjoyed playing the guitar and cooking big meals for his family. He lovingly tended vegetable and flower gardens; he had a special knack for making almost anything grow. He spent most of his summers growing and sharing vegetables with his neighbors and friends. Buck had a quick smile and an easy laugh; he never met a stranger. His life of quiet simplicity richly blessed his family and all who knew him.He leaves to cherish his memory, Margaret, his wife of 55 years; two daughters, Janet Lowrey (Jim) of Winston Salem and Joan Hoover (Richard) of Charlotte. He delighted in his four grandchildren, Allison and Jay Lowrey and Brent and Laura Hoover. He is survived by six sisters, Margaret Bonfield, Frances Turner, Mary Greene, Sarah Helms, Betty Hager and Nancy Wilson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Little.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church on Thursday, February 28, 2002. A graveside service at the church cemetery will begin at 2:00 followed by a memorial service at 2:30. After the service, the family will receive friends in the Church Fellowship Hall.
