Samuel Giberga Obituary

Samuel Giberga passed away at home in New Orleans, surrounded by his family, on August 6, 2021. He was born in Havana, Cuba, on April 15, 1931, to Samuel Giberga Touzet and Hilda Lecuona Caballol. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maria de los Angeles 'Nunu' Fowler Giberga. They were married in Havana, Cuba, on November 24, 1956. Sam attended the University of Pennsylvania and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Havana. After he and his young family fled the communist regime in Cuba in 1960, he completed a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering at Clemson University. First as an engineer and later in management, Sam had a successful career serving in senior roles with Formica Corporation and later as President of Olympic Fibers, S.A., a major synthetic fibers concern headquartered in San Jose, Costa Rica. In retirement, he and Nunu travelled extensively. He was an avid tennis player and member of the New Orleans Lawn Tennis Club. Sam was a dedicated father, grandfather and great grandfather who delighted in witnessing the joys and successes of his family. He relished the company of family and friends. He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Maria Giberga Crumley and Thomas Vincent Crumley; and his son and daughter-in-law, Samuel Alberto Giberga and Jill Andry Giberga. Sam was blessed with six grandchildren: Caroline Isabel Crumley, Sophia Giberga Thompson, Thomas Fowler Crumley, Samuel Andry Giberga, William Vincent Crumley, and Joseph Ernest Giberga. He most recently welcomed a great-granddaughter, Poppy Louise Thompson. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Wednesday, August 11, at Notre Dame Seminary Chapel, 2901 South Carrollton Avenue, New Orleans. A visitation will be held at 9:30 with a funeral mass to follow at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Tulane Cancer Center. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Boulevard in Metairie. The online guestbook is available at www.leitzeaganfuneralhome.com.
