Sarah Emery Obituary

Sarah Ray Emery, 87 and a long-time resident of Metairie, passed away August 4, 2018, at Peristyle Lakeview Assisted Living in New Orleans. Survivors include her sons Robert A. Schimek, Jr. of Metairie and Ray Alan Schimek (Susan) of Houston, TX; granddaughter Jennifer S. Richkus (Jacob) and great-grandson William L. Richkus of Washington, DC; and sister Emily R. Loper (Marion) of Knoxville, TN. She was predeceased by her parents John D. and Ruth W. Ray, her daughter Ruth Amy Schimek, her second husband Curtis R. Emery, and her brother John David Ray, Jr. She grew up in Beaver Falls, PA, and graduated from Beaver Falls Senior High School. She earned an undergraduate degree from Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA, and masters degrees from LSU and Southeastern Louisiana University. She taught in Baltimore, MD, at LSU, and at several Jefferson Parish public schools. In retirement she traveled extensively, including trips throughout North America and to the Caribbean, Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Before her illness, she had been a parishioner at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church and a member of the Southern Yacht Club, Mensa International, and local bridge clubs. The family is most grateful for the care and compassion of the staff at Peristyle. A memorial service will be held at a future date.

My mother, Janie Zurynski, was so fond of her dear friend, Sarah Ellen! I'm sure they are both just "gabbing-up-a-storm" in Heaven. My deepest sympathies to the entire family.
