Played with Scotty a handful of times 20 years ago when he subbed with Jimmy Prima on Bourbon St. Was always a nice guy and his playing was authentic. I just learned of his passing as I moved away from New Orleans years ago. Rest easy, friend!

Years go by. Scott was a college friend. Well, actually, I had dropped out of Rutgers for a semester and moved to New Orleans for the southern adventure. Scott played trombone at "Your Father's Mustache" on Bourbon Street. I was a waiter and aspiring banjo player, having a lot of fun. As waiters, we were REQUIRED to scream a lot at the band. If you weren't rowdy enough, the manager would take you aside and tell you to yell more, shout jokes at the band. What a crazy job. Scott was getting a music degree at Loyola. After work, Scott would drive us to the black neighborhoods where they played music and ask to sit in with the band. Not too many white boys were doing that back in the late 1960s. But he connected, and they liked him.
We became friends. I met his parents. The captain. A conservative southern family who lived out by lake Ponchatrain. They took me to the racetrack, the nice section, where they serve a beautiful lunch, and the women wear flowery hats.
I moved back to New Jersey, for college and law school, and then out to Los Angeles, but we kept in touch. On the phone, and we talked about legal issues and life.
After Hurricane Katrina, I naturally thought of him, and since he was living in the French Quarter the water came up and he had to move out for a while.
So here it is, June 3 2019, I just thought of him. That I should call him and visit him in New Orleans, catch on up life. So I go to the internet, and find an Obituary.
The music lives on. Just a closer walk with thee.
I wish I had photos of him from those days at 'Your Father's Mustache".
Another Nola ex pat.

Scotty Hill was a wonderful Trombonist. He had his own style which clearly respected Frog Henry and a smile like the Sunshine.

This can't be true. I just saw you at the Market Cafe. I just heard your music. You just responded to a post on my Facebook page. Surely you will be playing music while I sit near St. JEAN d arc? Is your place in Heaven near hers? Prayers for you and for all who called you friend. Tears are falling here, but there is joy for you, no longer in pain. Not gbye, for we will meet again , see you at the next set.
