Stella Sitges Obituary

Stella Champagne Sitges died at her home on Monday, Feb. 23. She was 99 years old. She was a homemaker and a pianist who was an active performer in her youth. Born in Breaux Bridge and raised in Lake Charles, she lived in New Orleans for the last 70 years. She graduated from The New Orleans Conservatory of Music (presently Loyola College of Music.) At the time of her death she was the oldest living graduate of Loyola University. After marrying the late Percy Sitges, she continued to brighten the lives of friends and family with her playing throughout her life. She was an active participant in the creation of the first New Orleans Philharmonic, and served as a Committee member who housed many of the great pianists who came to New Orleans to play with the orchestra. She was a member of the New Orleans Country Club and the Orleans Club. She is survived by her daughter Janet Swanzy, and her grand-daughter, Laura Sitges. On Friday, Feb. 27 there will be a visitation at 9:00 a.m. followed by Mass at 10:00 at St. Rita's Church at 2729 Lowerline, and burial will take place immediately after at Lafayette Cemetery #1 opposite Commander's Palace.
