Stephen Stumpf Obituary

Stephen (Steve) Frederick Stumpf, passed away April 2, 2018 at the age of 68. Born in New Orleans in 1949 and was a life-long resident of the Greater New Orleans Area, Stumpf was most recently Chairman of Durr Heavy Construction, after serving as its CEO for many years. A well-respected business leader and much beloved philanthropist, Stumpf's impact was felt well beyond the construction industry. Known as a big man with an even bigger heart he was committed to his family, his faith, his friends, his employees and the community. Stumpf served as a board member for the Catholic Leadership Institute, which helps clergy and lay leaders develop their skills, and was a former board member of The Catholic Foundation. He served as finance council chairman of St. Anselm Church, and was on the Archdiocesan Finance Council and Catholic Charities' Archbishop Hannan Community Appeal. He was a charter member of New Orleans Legatus, founding member of its Northshore chapter, and former member of its International Board of Governors. He was instrumental in bringing ACE Scholarships Program to Louisiana, helping hundreds of children receive scholarships to Catholic schools. Stumpf supported many charities including the Louisiana Special Olympics, which was near and dear to his heart. He and Durr employees developed an entertainment area for the athletes called "Olympic Town" during the spring games. Durr continues to sponsor and employees volunteer for the event every year. He served on the New Orleans Advisory Board for Iberia Bank, Board of Directors for Ochsner Health System, Board of the Louisiana Trooper Foundation, Board for Blueprint Louisiana and the Board for The Spitzer Center for Ethical Leadership. Stumpf was past president of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Bayou Chapter and former chairman of the board for Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI) and chaired SOUTHPAC, a political action committee for LABI. His other professional involvements included the Jefferson Business Council, the Jefferson Chamber, JEDCO, New Orleans Business Council, Committee of 100, Tulane's Family Business Forum and the World Presidents' Organization. He received numerous honors for his work in the community including: Order of St. Louis Medallion Award, Junior Achievement Hall of Fame, De La Salle High School Signum Fidei Award, Philanthropist of the Year for the Association of Fundraising Professionals. His hobbies included traveling, fishing, being an LSU Tigers fan, watching his race horses win at the track and spending time with his children and granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry Stumpf Jr. and Margaret Negrotto Stumpf, his brother Henry (Hank) Stumpf III and his sister Sally Stumpf. Survived by his loving wife of 45 years Donna Durr Stumpf; his 3 children: Dana Rae Stumpf-Farrell (Kenny), Stephen Frederick Stumpf, Jr., Shana Ann Stumpf, his granddaughter: Dara Felicia Farrell; his sister-in-law Marlene Richard Stumpf; his brothers Kenneth Stumpf (Carrol), Quentin Stumpf (Jan) and his sister Cynthia Stumpf Atwell (George). Dear Donna,
Steve wasn't just a competitor, he was someone to aspire to become. He was truly a leader in our industry who had great honor and integrity in all aspects of his business and personal life. It has been an honor and privilege to compete through business, but more importantly Steve has been an inspiration to me, he showed me that success is achieved through hard work, dedication, faith, and prayer.

Steve will be sorely missed. He was a Free Enterprise and Merit Shop champion and was a leader our industry could count on. His catholicity was always admired and I am certain he is resting in eternal salvation from his life lived here on earth. I pray for his soul and comfort to his family he leaves behind.
