Suzanne Smith Obituary

Ms. Smith died on September 9, 2023 after a brief illness. She was born on July 15, 1935 in New Orleans, one of three children of Dr. Rawley M. Penick and Marie S. Penick. Sue was a volunteer with several charities, a homemaker, property manager, and later in life went back to school and earned a degree from Delgado Community College. Her clear-eyed focus throughout adult life was on supporting family whether this involved standing in a days-long line to apply for a kindergarten seat for a grandchild or driving the grandchildren to after-school destinations while their parents pursued professional careers. She is survived by a son, Frank M. Harbison (Catherine), a sister, Elizabeth C. Penick (Marsha), a brother, William S. Penick, three grandchildren, Megan L. Harbison (Ronni), Ryan P. Harbison and Rawley C. Harbison and one great-grandchild. She is predeceased by her parents, by a son Rawley P. Harbison, and by two ex-husbands Frank Harbison, Jr. and C. Horton Smith. The family would like to thank Lambeth House for the excellent care provided to Ms. Smith within the last two years. A private service was held at Lake Lawn Funeral Home and Cemeteries.

Sue was such a dear friend to my mother, Pit Murphy. It is comforting to know that my mom is now surrounded by all of her life-long friends. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. I know she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
