Thomas Christian Nielsen Sr.

Thomas Christian Nielsen, Sr., passed away on Friday, May 10, 2024, at the age of 92. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather that would do anything in the world for his family. Tom played football at LSU in 1951 and then enlisted in the Air Force in 1952. He served as an Honor Guard stationed in Washington, DC and Iceland during which he played on the military service football national championship team. He returned to LSU and majored in accounting. Tom was honored by membership in Beta Alpha Psi, an honorary accounting fraternity. He graduated in 1959 with a BS in accounting and worked for LA. Champagne-CPA firm for three years. Following, he worked at Piccadilly and Rider's, then I. H. Rubenstein department stores as controller. Tom was quite an entrepreneur. He was president and owner of Monroe Safe and Lock Company, Alford Loan Co., Check Control System, Old New Orleans Restaurant, and the Comprehensive Computer Accounting and Tax Service. He served as chairman of the Business & Public Affairs Committee for three years, as Attendance Committee Chairman, and on the Board of Directors of the Downtown Kiwanis and a member for over 50 years for which he had over 33 years of perfect attendance. His proudest accomplishment there was creating the Pancake Day Program and helping to build it to what it is today. Tom is survived by his daughter, Sonja Landry Frost (Paul); son, Dane Nielsen; grandchildren, Tommy Finch (Kaitlyn), Jacob Landry (Jessica), and Benjamin Landry (Christina); great-grandchild, Owen; siblings, Karen Nielsen, Jens Nielsen (Diane); and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Nellie; parents, Eric and Mary Nielsen; son, Chris Nielsen; brother and his wife, Eric and Nancy Nielsen; and his significant, other Virginia Lea. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to Downtown Kiwanis.
