I am so sorry to hear of Viktor’s death, and offer my sincere condolences to his entire family and huge circle of friends.

It has been over two decades since I had contact with Viktor, but when we had dealing together they were frequent, intense and purposeful.  He was such a warm, generous and capable person that our relationship has left me with vivid memories that have lasted to this day undiminished by time.  I can hardly believe he is gone.

Freeport-McMoRan was trying to open business with the USSR for natural gas and other natural resources.  Viktor was our translator and consultant on Soviet business.  We traveled together in Russia, where his warmth and personality made difficult situations more bearable, and offered comic relief on more than one occasion.  My two favorite example of this is when Viktor’s luggage was lost on the flight from Finland to Moscow, and he was left with what he had on at the time – brown pants and a tan sports coat.  At that time, there was nothing for sale in Russia even for a native Russian speaker and Viktor was smaller than our team members.  He had to attend our many meetings with Russian Ministers with his same brown pants and tan sports jacket.  We had quite a few laughs over that situation.

The other memory I have was Viktor’s panic and genuine concern about my wisecracks as we walked on a public sidewalk past the KGB Headquarters.  He was convinced that we were being monitored, and our humor represented a great risk.  He was probably right, and I was too naïve to understand what Viktor had experienced in his life in Russia.

Forgive my reminisces at this time of sorrow, but Viktor will be remembered and held dear in my heart.  God bless you, Viktor.

We offer our deepest sympathy to the Khalimsky family on your tragic loss. Viktor was one of the most treasured friends of the Haydel family, always warm, friendly with a quiet disarming charm that captured everyone's admiration. Even though we had less contact with Viktor in recent times,we will sadly miss him. The world will most certainly be a sadder place without him. We will keep Viktor and you, his family, in our thoughts and prayers.

Fainochka, Anechka -
I am so deeply-deeply sorry for your tragic loss. Vitya was a truly unique person, with his warmth, and wit, and intelligence. Unfortunately, there is no shortcuts through the grief, and you two are facing some truly awful times. But it will eventually get better, I promise. Your pain will never go away completely, but it will become dull, instead of the piercing agony you are feeling now.
With love and deep sorrow,
Rachel Goodman, Los Angeles CA
