Warren Burke Obituary

Warren William Burke, Sr., a retired freight handler for Railway Express Agency, died on Sunday, May 8, 2005 at East Jefferson General Hospital. He was 83. Beloved husband of Mary ""Creekie'' Verhasselt Burke for 55 years. Father of Warren William Burke, Jr., Robert Stephen Burke, Geraldine ""Deanie'' B. Vernace and Mary Katherine ""Kathie'' B. Stein. Son of the late Richard Burke and Magdalena Escher Burke. Brother of Paul V. Burke, Clarence J. Burke, Alvin A. Burke, Sister Richard Marie Burke, S.S.N.D., Alice B. Schilling and the late Gerard Burke, Harold Burke and Richard Burke. Also survived by 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was born in New Orleans, LA and was a resident of Jefferson, LA for the past 31 years. Mr. Burke attended Holy Cross High School and was formerly employed for the American Lamp Co. He was a Staff Sergeant in the US Army and served in the 84th Infantry Division of the ""Railsplitters"" during WWII. He was awarded with the ATO, EAMETO, Good Conduct and the WWII Victory Medals. He was also a member of the VFW Post 6640. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 at 12:00 noon at Mater Dolorosa Church, 1230 S. Carrollton Ave. in New Orleans, LA. Interment will be in St. Louis #3 Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM at the church. Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Sorry I was not able to attend Warren's funeral. In my younger years, the Burkes were a big part of my life. I wish I would have gone to Frankie and Johnnie's get-togethers once a month and I would have gotten to see Warren.
