William L. Rosenbaum, age 74, of New Orleans, LA died on Wednesday, November 7 at Ochsner/Baptist Hospital. Billy was born in New Orleans on October 8, 1944 to Leopold and Blanche Rosenbaum. He is survived by his husband, Jeffrey Faughnan, after a wonderful life together of more than 36 years. Also survived by his mother-in-law, Nanette McCutcheon; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lisbeth and Russell Hepp, and their sons, Ryan and Eric - nephews whose lives he particularly cherished helping to enrich; father-in-law and step-mother-in-law, Bill and Carolyn Sobering, and their children, Holland and Juliet; his life-long and dear friend, Isabel Goldstein; and many cousins, including Eileen Gradwohl and Lynn Friedman. Billy was a graduate of McMain High School (1962), Louisiana State University (BA, 1968), Loyola University (MA, 1973) and UNO (PhD 2000). He spent his professional career at St. Martin's Episcopal School in Metairie, where he was a beloved teacher and counselor for 46 years. He also had a thriving private counseling practice for 25 years. Billy loved his life with Jeffrey, traveling with his nephews, going to movies and theater, helping students and clients, and spending time with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Louisiana SPCA, St. Martin's Episcopal School, the American Cancer Society or the Historic New Orleans Collection. A private memorial gathering is scheduled for November 17.

Dr. Rosenbaum was someone I grew to know and love over the 15 years I went to see him for counseling. He always had a positive outlook for everything and helped me through some very tough times in my life. He encouraged me to continue writing poetry and songs and not a day goes by that I do not think of him and how he has helped me. He went from a counselor to a friend of mine. He will be greatly missed.

Mr. Rosenbaum, a teacher and adviser at St. Martin's when I went there, made the world a happier place and graced us all with his smile and that ancient Cadillac that somehow seemed to fit him. Somehow just the sight of this man improved my mood and made my day better; such was his gift of spreading joy.

Condolences for those dear to him and to whom he was close and dear. In time, may your tears turn to laughter as you remember his uplifting presence.

Bill was a great man and counselor that I have had the absolute pleasure to know for almost 30 years. He was my mentor, colleague and friend. Bill was a charismatic person who believed in me and countless others which helped us be successful in our lives.
He helped me in so many ways in my professional counseling career and in my life that I will be forever grateful for.
We will continue Bill's legacy by helping others as he always did with grace and dignity. Prayers and support go out to Jeffrey, family and friends.

Bill was a refuge to me in the mid 90s, as he was to a generation of children. Having someone so intelligent, so patient, so genuine to talk to is a gift at any age, but when you're a kid it's unparalleled. He listened - really listened - when so many others rushed to judgment or oversimplified the complexity of being a teenager. The true strength of this has only begun to reveal itself to me after working with teenagers and young adults for the last dozen years of my professional life.

My heart aches for his husband, loved ones and the countless lives he touched.
