You know that you are always in my heart. Thank you for showing up in my dreams so often, especially last night at the beginning of your birthday. I know that you would want nothing more than to be with your kids and grandkids and greats, but I know that you are having a ball in Heaven. I love you, Mama.

Hey Mama! I hope you are proud of the home we are closing on today! Today is the anniversary of Daddy's death, so I wanted to mark the day by thanking you as well for the steps you both took to purchasing the Royal Street house. Let this house be a symbol of what you instilled in all of us by showing us that we can own our homes as well. Love you and see you ALWAYS in my dreams and in my life. PS - I hope you like your picture on the file cabinet and the poem you wrote that I memorized and consistently say to my students often!

Auntieeeeeeeeeee,
That's what my husband would say each time he saw you. Words can't expressed the loss we felt upon hearing of your passing. You always made us feel good talking to you during our visits and even from your phone calls to check on us. I am so glad I have a video on my phone of you singing during the family reunion that I will always deeply cherish. When I think of you, I have my video to up lift my spirits and laugh and sing with you over and over again. You will be missed and always in our hearts. We love you dearly but God loves you best.

Mama's Waters
I have a simple, wedged memory. It has been running through my mind at different intervals during the day for the past couple of weeks now. I see a mahogany-stained bathroom with patterns of chocolate swirls that was built by the crafty hands of my Father. I remember how excited he was when he built a special stair in it for my mom to easily step down into the porcelain tub to relax in one of her baths of escape--escapes from the husband, from the five children, from the demands of newly working life, from the hassles of the day. Yes, that sort of bath. The flow of the memory, however, does not steady at the beautiful joy on my Dad's face once my mother approves of the remodeled bath area but, instead, on my Mom and her use of it.
I glide into a vivid memory of a small bathroom long enveloped by the waters of Hurricane Katrina. It does not matter what room my younger siblings and I are in. We can hear the hard water quickly gushing out of the metal spigot. A recurrent mental thought: “Mama's about to take her special bath.” I hear the reaction to the ritual from my younger brother who goes hiding in the backroom to escape the waters and look jealously at my younger sister, who is still in diapers and does not have a clue that she will be next in line to experience the pouring of dry bones into fresh, pure new water. As soon as my Mom is done with her bath my brother and I will go right in, she first, then we, one after the other into her special bath--her warm, silky, soothing bath water that feels like those Arkansas hot springs caressing to the bone, to the soul.
I pull off my multicolored, flowered sundress with tethered straps and throw it in the woven hamper standing proudly on the new, shiny waxed floor. I step onto the handcrafted step that goes straight into the foamy, creamy water and sit down on it, allowing my feet to test the waters. The Calgon box of bath beads sits lazily in a mosaic-designed square on the floor by the side of the awaiting tub, and I defiantly pick it up…just to read the advertisement and descriptions of a rosy scent or some showery rain type of aroma. Her favorite is the rose scent, which becomes mine as well. I cuddle with the residue of Camay soap and fizzing Calgon bath beads—two items we are not allowed to touch for our own bath excursions. I see light rays of my Dad's three-bulb fixture bouncing off sparkling crystals at the water's top. As I adjust to the temperature, I never recall Mama's water being too hot or too cold, just just right. Ahhhhh, warm and inviting. The unique smell of Calgon literally penetrates all my senses and the commercial that advertised it so many years ago comes alive: “Ahhhhh, Calgon…take me away!”
As my body fully submits to the water, the rose colored water seeps into my pores and goose bumps disappear under warm, relaxing water. My pores feel and fill as if a gentle hand is pouring warmed water from a country kettle onto my bare skin. I fixate my sight on the hazy mist searing from the glassy water and from steaming toes of my half-polished toenails that were almost long enough to insert into the grooves of the water valve. Just as the actress does in the commercial, I too ease into Mama's water and imagine my Father's bathroom into a forest filled with giant, copper oak, sap dripping pine and night jasmine trees cascading wild magnolias and blue iris flowers. I too, with shuttered eyes, sluggishly relax in a big easy tub of water. I too imagine being in the middle of silence. How relaxing and safe it is to be neck down in soapy, warm water with a fragrance that smells of lightly scented rose petals and the sweetness of springtime. Away…I… go…under…I…slip until my ears fill their rivers, until only the oval of my face is outlined by tiny lilac bubbles. I hear nothing but the gentle waves of my Mom's bathwater.
As soon as I adjust and relax in my world, I hear that my time is up and that it is my brother's turn to get into Mama's water. “Run some hot water in there for Fella'!” she says. Here returns the world, the thumping and complaining of my little brother found in his usual hiding place and being told that bathing is good for him. I slowly pat off and figure that once in Mama's water, a whole ‘nother world opens to him and his dumb tub toys and I later hear him crying to stay in!
Eventually, I pilgrimage in the mindset of my eldest sister and become “too old” to take baths after mom. I would eventually take showers, even sneak some of Dad's Brut's brand of soap-on-a-rope! However, bath time was still a ritual, but I never got the water the fragrance or the ambience that Mama's bathwater took on…each time. The tub of water just didn't seem…clean enough, pure enough, safe enough. But it is those kinds of baths that make me feel safe and relaxed and thankful that I have a place of silence where I close the door and regain my serenity with the feel of a warm bath hug that takes me back some 35 years to the remodeled bathroom that my Father built out of handy love for my Mother. Back then, I gladly accepted being second to my mom's ritual and thought nothing of it. Now I see it as nothing other than an honor to bathe after her.

To The Watson family:
Mrs. Yvonne was a true reflection of the light of Christ and will be missed by all who knew her. She was loving, funny, and full of jokes! We must remember the word of God is true and we will see her again:
According to the Lord's own word, “We tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever”. I Thessalonians 4:15-17
With loving memories.
Yours in Christ,
Pam
