Douglas Bergantzel

1935 - 2025

Douglas E. Bergantzel, 90, passed away on October 13, 2025, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Born on July 26, 1935, Doug led a life defined by ingenuity, dedication, and a deep love for motorsports and family. A proud Army veteran, Doug later became a cornerstone of the Council Bluffs community through his mechanical expertise. For over 60 years, he owned and operated Midwest Montesa and Alternator Starter Exchange, where he repaired everything from automobiles and motorcycles to large equipment and even broken toys.

Doug's passion for motorsports extended beyond the garage. He was an avid motorcycle racer and mini-car fabricator and shared his enthusiasm through both video and radio-based motorsports programming. His creativity and energy were matched by his love of gardening and the joy he found in spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Betty Bergantzel; his sister, Carol Summers; his children, Kris Ranney (husband Drew Ranney), Wendy Brower, and David Bergantzel (wife Melissa Bergantzel); grandchildren Carmen Brower Turack, Megan Brower, Kyle Ranney, Erika Marroquin, Anastasia Heaps, Izaak Bergantzel, Abigail Bergantzel; and many great-grandchildren. Doug was preceded in death by his first wife, Joann Bergantzel; infant son, and his parents, Pete and Phylis Bergantzel.

A Memorial Open House will be held on Sunday, October 19th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Doug's home at 2501 South 13th Street, Council Bluffs, Iowa. Friends and family are welcome to gather in remembrance.

Doug's legacy as a skilled mechanic, business owner, veteran, and loving patriarch will be cherished by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those whose lives he touched.
