Fred Lainson Obituary

Fred L.

Lainson, Jr.

January 25, 1926

September 27, 2023

Frederick Lee Lainson passed away September 27, 2023, at the age of 97. Fred was born on January 25, 1926, to Frederick and Anna (Wheeler) Lainson, in Council Bluffs, IA. He graduated with the Class of 1944 from Abraham Lincoln High School. After graduating he worked full time at the family-owned Lainson greenhouse. Because of the tragic loss of his father, Fred, along with his mother and siblings, ran Lainson Greenhouses, described as one of the largest greenhouses west of the Mississippi. With the closing of the greenhouse in 1959, Fred joined the Post Office where he worked for 27 years. After retiring, Fred enjoyed volunteering at the Public Library, Jennie Edmundson Hospital, and 26 years of delivering Meals on Wheels. His favorite pastimes were gardening and golf, with a "hole in one" being a lifelong highlight. Fred married Vernelle Olsen in 1947. To this marriage three children were born. After her passing in 1980 he married Barbara Thornton Andrews. They were married for 34 years. Fred was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Harry, George, and Anna Margaret McPartland. Fred is survived by his three children, Suzanne Jensen (Carroll), Fred III (Trudy), and Craig (Stephanie). Fred is also survived by six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation, Saturday, at 10 a.m., with a funeral service at 11 a.m., at Saint John Lutheran Church, 633 Willow Ave. Fred will be laid to rest in Walnut Hill Cemetery, with a luncheon to follow at Saint John Lutheran Church Social Hall. Memorials may be made to Saint John Lutheran Church.

To the Lainson Family,
So sorry for your loss. Thought and Prayers are with you. My father Tom Capel was working at the greenhouse the day of the tragic accident. Mother use to talk about it all the time. There is a story in the history of Council Bluffs book about that terrible day. God Bless
