Jane Littell Meyer
February 9, 1950 - October 8, 2025
Jane Littell Meyer, 75, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away on October 8, 2025, after a long battle with dementia. Jane was born on February 9, 1950, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to G. Patterson (Pat) and Justine (Davis) Littell, whose values of perseverance, service and love shaped her life. As a family, they moved from Indianapolis to Chatham, New Jersey, where she attended high school.
Jane built a distinguished career as an attorney at Mutual of Omaha, where she retired as a Vice President and Assistant General Counsel in 2002. She graduated from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she met her husband, Philip Meyer, and attended law school Creighton University before transferring and graduating from Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law in 1976. She broke numerous barriers for women in her field in the 1970s and 1980s, including being one of three women in her law school and serving as co-counsel and winning a case at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Many of Jane's passions were outside of her career. Jane poured her energy into her community. She served on the board for the Council Bluffs Habitat for Humanity and Bluffs Art Council. She was an active member and leader of PEO, Service League, Meals on Wheels, Emanuel Lutheran Church (Council Bluffs) and Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church (Omaha). Jane was a devout Christian and a great study of diverse spiritual and world leaders.
Jane celebrated over 52 years of marriage with Philip Meyer, M.D., who loved and supported her throughout their 50+ years, and through her final moments. Together they raised two daughters, Suzanne (Thomas) Tucker, M.D., and Leslie (Robert, "Bobby") Basham, both who live in San Diego, California. Her daughters and grandchildren were the pride of her life. She was a loving and dedicated grandmother to six, Adelaide, Pearl and Willa Tucker, and Audrey, Robert ("Trey") and Emerson Basham. She is also survived by her brother, John (Joy) Littell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her soft voice, generous spirit, genuine heart, and courageous strength will be greatly missed. She taught us to fully live, learn and love. She will be remembered as a great attorney, scholar, giver, and above all, a sweet and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
The visitation will be held on Friday, October 17, 2025, from 5 pm to 7 pm, at the Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The funeral will be on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 11 am at the Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Pastor Ashley Hall will be officiating. A luncheon will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the Creighton University School of Law or
Alzheimer's Association. Please visit
