Janis Lustgraaf

1933 - 2021

Janis Lustgraaf, of Crescent, IA passed away August 24, 2021. Janis Iola (Nielsen) Lustgraaf was born in Audubon, IA., on October 4, 1933, to Harry Charles and Lillie (Madsen) Nielsen. She was married to Phillip Dale Lustgraaf, Sr., on June 3, 1955. They had 4 children. She is preceded in death by her parents and son, Phillip Dale Lustgraaf, Jr. Janis attended a one-room country school and graduated from Audubon High School in 1952. She attended one year at Iowa State Teachers' College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She enrolled at Jennie Edmundson School of Nursing and University of Omaha in 1953, graduating from Jennie Ed in 1956 and University of Omaha in 1957. She earned her master's degree in Educational Administration from Iowa State University. She retired from the Jennie Edmundson School of Nursing as Assistant Director/Instructor. She volunteered many hours with the Pottawattamie Democratic Party. In addition to her husband Phillip, of Crescent, IA., Janis is survived by her children Cheryl, of Storm Lake, IA., Mark and Sandy, of Plymouth, IA., and Kristene and Jeff Athey, of Crescent; grandchildren Phillip Dale, III (Amanda), Scott (Jamie) Athey, and David Athey; great-granddaughters Caroline Joan Lustgraaf and Evelyn Louise Athey; brother Darrell (Joan) Nielsen, of Kansas City, MO; numerous nieces and nephews, and other family members. CHI Health Nurse Honor Guard Sunday 2 p.m., with visitation to follow until 6 p.m., at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Private Inurnment at a later date at the Hazel Dell Cemetery. The family will direct memorials.
