Carol Gengenbach Obituary

Northfield - Carol Ann Gengenbach, age 83, of Northfield, passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Carol was born on June 16, 1942 in Minneapolis, MN to Algot F and Helen V Hawkinson Wicklund. She was the third of four children, after her brothers David and Richard, and before her sister Marilyn. She graduated from South High in Minneapolis in 1960 before attending Lutheran Bible Institute in Los Angeles, CA to study the Bible and theology.

When Carol came home from California, she married her first husband, Phil Bang, in 1963, with whom she had two children, Kristine and Paul. She received her BA in Education from the University of Minnesota in 1982. Her first teaching job was at Hall Free School in Minneapolis and she went on to teach for 25 years in Northfield, before retiring in 2008.

While teaching in Northfield, she met Gerry Gengenbach, who she married in 1988. Together they raised Gerry's sons, Pip and Marty.

Retirement gave Carol time to pursue her passion for volunteering. She served on the Board of Directors of the Northfield Retirement Community and on the Foundation. She was elected to the Board of Directors of the Community Action Center of Northfield, serving for nine years, the last two as chairwoman. She tutored adults for their GEDs and was part of the team that planned the CAC 40th Anniversary and Housing Fundraiser. She was involved in many community programs in Northfield.

Carol was preceded in death by parents, her brother David, and her grandson Sam. She is survived by her husband Gerry; her siblings Richard (Kelly) and Marilyn (David); her sister-in-law Dorothy; her children Kris (David), Paul (Amy), Pip (Elizabeth) and Marty (Juliet); and her grandchildren Meakin, Katie, Elly, Annika, Marenna, Henry and Max.

A celebration of Carol's life will be at 2 PM, Saturday, December 13, 2025 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Northfield. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. A reception will follow the service at the church. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery in Northfield..
