Barry Durkin Obituary

DURKIN - Barry of Lynnfield, MA entered into rest on February 23, 2007, dearly beloved husband of 16 years to Claire (Wilkie) Durkin. Father of Jeff Durkin, a 15 year old freshman at Lynnfield High School. Barry was actively involved in his son's life as a basketball and football coach. Among many other things, Barry was a role model for young men, teaching them to grow into distinguished gentlemen. Born in Paterson and raised in Hawthorne, NJ, Barry lived his life according to the time honored values of respect for tradition, strong faith in God, loyalty to friends and family, and hard work. Many of these attributes were reinforced throughout his childhood by the strong community in Saint Anthony's Church and School. Barry was a Charter Member and later Director of the Muchachos Drum and Bugle Corps of Hawthorne, NJ. He also was a member of the Hawthorne Caballeros Senior and Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps. After his education at William Paterson College he began a sales career where he advanced to Vice President of Sales of several global ground transportation companies including Avis, Budget and Carey Limousine. Barry was a long standing member of the National Business Travel Association (NBTA), participating on several Ground Transportation Committees and played an instrumental role in the formation of the Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE). Barry's most cherished activity was spending time with family and friends, where he was the consummate host making everyone comfortable. His ability to connect with people of all walks of life made him beloved both professionally and personally. He was a man who celebrated others' happiness. In Lynnfield, he lived his belief in contributing to the community by becoming a volunteer for St. Maria Goretti parish where he made many friends who were of great support during his long illness. Often times people diagnosed with cancer reevaluate their priorities however it was never necessary for Barry as his priorities were properly placed since his childhood. Barry was predeceased by his father Leo Pat Durkin and mother, Catherine (Arata) Durkin. He leaves behind his beloved wife and true soul mate Claire and his wonderful son Jeff whom he cherished and who carries his legacy forward. Barry also leaves his cousins, father-in-law Joseph K. Wilkie and members of the Wilkie family who loved him dearly. He also leaves countless friends in Massachusetts, New York and especially his loyal friends of 50 years in Hawthorne, New Jersey. He will be remembered as an honorable gentleman, who understood the value of living a good and decent life, where family, community and hard work are celebrated as extraordinary. His greatest gift to the world was the way he raised his son, who carries forward the wonderful charisma, integrity, and grace of his father. His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave. Wakefield, Saturday at 9 AM followed by a funeral mass in St. Maria Goretti Church, 112 Chestnut Street, Lynnfield at 10:00. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Friday 2-4 and 7-9. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Lynnfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202.

It was with profound sadness that I learned of Barry's passing. We have been friends for many years and I cherish all of the memories and mourn the fact that there will be no more to be made.

Barry had the most wonderful outlook on life--no matter what happened, he could find the good in the experience. All of life's setbacks were lessons, all of life's joys were a blessings. Barry made me smile through some of the darkest moments in my life.

His life was truly blessed and enriched by his wife Claire and his son Jeffrey. My heart and prayers go out to them in this their time of need. May God bless you both with his love and know that Barry has taken up residence in his mansion at the right hand of God our Father. He is at peace and suffers no more and in this we can find solace.

Good bye my friend.

Barry, I love you and will miss you dearly. Our time over the past year or so has truly been extraordinary and a blessing. Clearly, we came to know one another much more during this time than in our first encounter with the Muchachos nearly thirty years ago.
I promise, through Christ who strengthens me, to continue to be a support to Claire and Jeffrey. Someday, in fullfillment of our Lord's Promise, we will all meet again to worship God, to chat, and to celebrate, in Paradise. Eternal Peace be with you my friend.
With Love In Christ, Ralph

Barry was my friend...I trusted his wisdom, enjoyed his company and admired his ability to serve in any capacity to get the job done for the TEAM.

He was not boastful, vulgar, prideful and he always left his ego in a place where his own self interests were always last.

Barry's legacy is one my family and I will always remember...His enthusiasm, kindness, intelligence and zest for life were charachteristics you could not miss when you saw Barry. Always one with a smile and genuine hello, he personified a man with grace and dignity in all his success' and later trials. One who was apprecitive of others and humbled by God's blessings in his life and that of his family.

Claire and Jeff were never far from Barry's motivation for doing something or giving of his time.

Men like Barry are true leaders in the most significant way we all can learn from...He did not change "the world", but he certainly changed our world and those around him and how a life can and should be lived.

Matthew:25:20-21
Lord, you delivered to me five talents: Look, I have gained five more talents beside them.
His Lord said to him, "Well done good and faithful servant" you were faithful over a few things and I will make you ruler over many things...Enter into the joy of your Lord".

I will miss you Barry.

In Christ,

I had the pleasure of working for Barry twice, Avis and Budget. Memorable relationships both personal and professional. He was honest, frank and loyal and somehow was successful in Sales. Perhaps it was the impression he could make on people; my daughter remembers him fondly from vists to our office some 25 years ago.

In life, Barry always remembered the three basic "Fs" that should guide us all. His Faith, his Family, and his Friends.
