Cameron Anderson Obituary

Cameron I. Anderson of Allendale, who helped developed the Foot Locker athletic shoe chain while an executive with the Kinney Shoe Corp., died Saturday. He was 85.

As a teenager, Mr. Anderson sold shoes in the Kinney store his father managed in Wausau, Wis. To his parents' consternation, he left the University of Minnesota a month before graduation to manage his own Kinney store in Madison, Wis., said June Anderson, his wife of 60 years.

"He grew up with shoes," she said. "They were his life's work."

Mr. Anderson spent 45 years with Kinney, once the nation's largest full-service family shoe retailer. He was promoted to president in 1979 and retired as president and CEO in 1989.

He was instrumental in launching Kinney's Foot Locker subsidiary in 1974. While the Kinney name has disappeared from the retail scene, Foot Locker today has 1,911 stores in 21 countries, including 1,171 in the United States.

Mr. Anderson proved himself a seer in 1985 when The New York Times asked about trends in athletic footwear. "Just supply enough Air Jordans," he said, referring to the Nike brand endorsed by Michael Jordan, then a Chicago Bulls rookie. "It's going to be one of the biggies."

A onetime member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness, Mr. Anderson practiced what he preached. Until last year, when he learned he had lymphoma, he walked two miles a day at a local health club. Asked what her husband wore on his feet, June Anderson said, "Nikes or Reeboks or whatever. He knew his shoes."

Mr. Anderson made international headlines in 1990 and it had nothing to do with Nikes or Reeboks.

He went to Germany to hand-deliver a 14th-century sheepskin manuscript to its rightful owner, Baron Helmut Haller von Hallerstein. Mr. Anderson, a soldier during World War II, came into the manuscript's possession at the castle of Grossgrundlach, near Nuremburg, in the war's closing days. The document, which described a dispute over land and timber rights, had hung on the wall of his Allendale home.

Mr. Anderson decided to look into the document's history after reading about the unrelated theft of Germany's Quedlinburg treasures. He sent a copy of the manuscript to the curator of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City.

"I thought it was a nice souvenir from the war," he told The Record. "As it turned out, the document proved to be quite interesting."

He added, laughing: "I knew I would return it, because I did not want the West German police pulling up in front of my house in a black Mercedes to take me away."

Mr. Anderson, a 45-year resident of Allendale, is survived by his wife; his children, Marilyn Bristow of Frankfort, Ill., James C. Anderson of Allendale and Robert M. Anderson of Mahwah; a sister, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visiting is tonight tues from7 to 9 at Robert Spearing Funeral Home, Park Ridge, and Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Montvale Evangelical Free Church, followed by the funeral service. Interment will be in George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.

Cam Anderson was proud to serve and defend the USA. He used to speak about his time in Normandy, and he did return there while he was president of the Kinney Shoe Family. G-d bless his sole.

Cam was a great leader. I attended many meetings over the 37 years I was with Kinneys and I always came away with a positive outlook about our company and the direction he was leading us.

May God bless,

Cam was an insightful man of God. His advice to me on the financial and organizational structure needed to effectively manage the Church proved invaluable over the years. I never received advise from Cam that proved inaccurate. I enjoyed my time with Cam and look forward to seeing him again. June, the prayers of your MEFC family are with you.

Cam was one in a million; it was a pleasure to work with him for over 30 years. My fondest memory is seeing him in the mornings with dozens of post it notes on his desk recapping his thoughts from the night before to be passed out to those whose names were on the top of each of them. Working at Kinney with Cam was the best times of my career.

Cam was a great man, full of spirit and life. He brought enthusiasm to work every day; whether sales were rocking or plummeting. He recognized and harvested talent. He lead by example, had a pulse on the market, and understood shoes like no one else.
He kept his office stocked with candy and soda, offered advice willingly. Whenever Cam was deep in thought, a bomb could go off, and he would not hear it. He could be walking up the hall and would not even know that others were speaking to him. Of cause, Cam was famous for his little yellow index cards, full of notes - where he would write thoughts questions and comments to hit us with when we would come in to review something with him.
June, I would like to share a funny vignette: One day Cam’s senior management team was gathered in his office having a division review, and a big water bug ran past me. I screamed and most of the men in the room “scattered,” but Cam stamped it out, told me to come back, and nick-named me ‘Sue city Sue,’ because I was afraid of these huge bugs. I enjoyed working with and for Cam, and remember my days at Kinney with much fondness. Please send my regards to Jim as well. My condolences and best wishes to you and the family in your time of sorry. May you find comfort in knowing how much joy and enthusiasm Cam brought to the shoe industry and his other “family.”

We never really know how long God will allow us to walk on this earth. Some journeys are longer than others. Isn't it amazing how through our journey, God allows certain events and certain people into our lives. I am so thankful God gave me the privilege to know Cam. He was a good man. I will miss him as I know Montvale Evangelical Free Church will also. You are in both Betty and my prayers. I look forward to seeing Cam again one day in Heaven.

Cam was a Christian role model for me at MEFC and many others for over 30 years. His consistent commitment to Christ and church leadership raised the bar for the younger generations which followed.

Cam was a wonderful friend, respected leader in the community and church, and fine man of God. I count it a privilege to have been his Pastor for several Montvale years. We are praying for you June, and your family, and we celebrate that according to the truth of Jesus Christ, Cam is now in His presence because he trusted Jesus for His salvation.

My prayers for the family that the Fathers love and peace will comfort you all. And at the same time I will give THANKSGIVING for his life and 'witness' as a man of great FAITH.

He was also an inspiration for me during my 20 years with Kinney, as a leader of tremendous INTEGRITY/CHARACTER. He was an integral part of why we could call our company 'family'. I will always remember him sharing his VISION/PURPOSE for our company.

CIA hired me way back when (1970) to be his secretary and he was a total joy to work with and for. He was a 'note' guy then and I'm sure he's up above us all, still taking notes. I'm so very glad to have been able to see him several times at the Christmas parties in Manhattan, as well as lunch at the Water Club with June and CIA. God's Blessings on June and the whole family. You are in my prayers. Kathy Kingsbury

My sincere condolences to the Anderson family. Knowing both Cam and June was a real privilege. I cherish the stories Cam told me about the his career and the early days of Foot Locker when everyone thought athletic footwear was a passing fad.

I've often thought of, and found strength in, those stories when moving against the tide.

Cam made an impact wherever he was. And I'm grateful to know that he's safe at him with his Savior. I'll see him again one day and share my own stories.

May the family find strength and peace in the lives Cam touched.

Cam was a good member in the Montvale EFC and could be counted on to pick up his end of the "yoke" whenever called upon to serve the Church or his fellow
