Craig Heinz Obituary

Craig Douglas Heinz

Craig Douglas Heinz, 67, passed away after a valiant battle with Covid-19. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Carol Heinz, and by his younger sister, Gretchen. He is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Evelyn "Evie" (née Fisher) Heinz of Cary, NC; his children, Heather Morgan Heinz of Tacoma, WA, Devon Nicole Heinz of Tahunanui, New Zealand, and Hannah Elise Heinz of Asheville, NC; his older siblings, Edward "Ted" Heinz (Zita), Clifford "Kip" Heinz (Catherine), and Deborah Maxwell (Terence); as well as many nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Montclair, NJ, Craig graduated from Montclair State University (BS Biology) and Bowling Green State University (MS Cell Biology). After a career in scientific microscopy and imaging, Craig retired to hiking, kayaking, board games, and remodeling their home at Smith Mountain Lake, VA. Craig led a very active and fulfilling life. A wonderful father, husband, coach, and mentor, Craig was always present in his children's lives, rarely missing a lacrosse game, soccer match, or swim meet. He shared with his family a love of music, reading, birdwatching, and stargazing. His bright eye for adventure took him on spontaneous road trips down new and diverse trails with Evie, overseas travel, and yearly retreats with lifelong friends.

He will be deeply missed and dearly remembered by many. A celebration of life will be held at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Nature Conservancy or the US Lacrosse Tewaarton Native American Scholarship.

Today the sun was shining when I learned of Craig’s passing. I was working in the gardens and sat to spend time thinking about this old friend. He is a good man who I never heard speak a harsh word of anyone. He was quick to welcome others and a joyful soul to be with.
Smart, kind, gentle and yet could throw a tough lax hit when needed.

And while the years have drifted us apart I have and shall always keep him delightfully in my heart.

And May his family be warmed in the years to come by memories from having had him so many years in their life.
