Eddie Hazell Obituary

Lit up New Jersey, Manhattan stages

Little Falls native Eddie Hazell, a jazz guitarist and singer who performed nationwide, including many gigs at North Jersey and Manhattan venues, died Nov. 2. He was 76.

He had Parkinson's disease, said his wife, Anne.

While a student at Passaic Valley High School, Mr. Hazell formed a group called the 3 Echoes, which occasionally became the 4 Echoes when Eddie brought in another musician.

"He knew what he wanted to do from the beginning there was no doubt he was going to be a musician," said Ed Petkus, who knew Mr. Hazell from the neighborhood and authored a biography of the guitarist.

Mr. Hazell toured extensively early in his career and cut his first album in 1961. He appeared on the "Today" show, "The Merv Griffin Show" and "Kraft Music Hall."

Mr. Hazell was playing at Bakerscq Keyboard Lounge in Detroit in 1964 when he asked a local trio to back him up. Some years later, the trio's bassist, Jim Hankins, received a job transfer to New Jersey and was invited by Mr. Hazell to join the Eddie Hazell Trio. They shared stages for a quarter century.

Hankins, of Hillsborough, said Mr. Hazell's stock in trade was "the American songbook."

"Broadway stuff, Gershwin," Hankins said. "He didn't have an exclusively jazz repertoire. Eddie was quite the professional. He knew what he wanted to play, and how he wanted to play it."

In a review of a 1975 performance at Stryker's Pub in Manhattan, John S. Wilson noted in The New York Times that Mr. Hazell's greatest attribute was neither his voice nor his "excellent" guitar playing.

"What gives Mr. Hazell his basic distinction," Wilson wrote, "is the adventurousness, imagination and taste shown in his choice of repertory, supported by the skill with which he realizes the possibilities of the material he has chosen."

The following year, The Record praised his album, "Take Your Shoes Off, Baby," calling it a collection of standards "enhanced by Hazell's deceptively casual approach."

Mr. Hazell, who moved to Vernon from Pompton Plainscq about 20 years ago, last performed in 2007, at Manhattan's Tavern on the Green. His trio appeared at venues across New Jersey, including the Williams Center for the Arts in Rutherford, Liberty State Park, Jimmy Reid's in Ramsey, Newark Airport, the Julius Forstmann Public Library in Passaic and the Bergen Museum in Paramus.

Petkus, a retired William Paterson University professor, interviewed Mr. Hazell, his family and his fellow musicians for the biography, which was published in February. It is titled "Someone Out There is Listening: The Life of Eddie Hazell, Jazz- Guitar-Vocalist."

Mr. Hazell may not have been a household name, Petkus said, but he made his mark.

"He had a successful career and a successful life," Petkus said. "The people who don't necessarily become the big stars are the ones who keep the genre going, and Eddie was certainly an innovator.

"He didn't compromise; he was unique in the way he sang and played the guitar. & He cared deeply about his musicians and cared deeply about his music. I would say he had star quality."

Mr. Hazell is survived by his wife, Anne Nielsen Hazell, and the children from his marriage to the late Naedine Thompson Hazell, who predeceased him: daughter Naedine cq both are naedine Hazell and sons Edward and Kevin Hazell. He also is survived by his stepchildren, Maegann cq Struble, Deborah Gallagher and Ned Meeder, and nine grandchildren.

Visiting will be Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at M. John Scanlan Funeral Home in Pompton Plains.cq

Eddie was one of my father's desr friends, they went to high school together. My dad wrote the liner notes on many of Eddie's albums. Eddie was my first guitar teacher when I was 12. i wish he knew that I went onto become a semi professional musician, recording my own albums and doing session guitar work for bands. He was akind dear man.

As a musician I wonder what Ed Petkus, Eddie's biographer, would say about what other singing guitarists remind him of Eddie.

I met Eddie in the late 1950's when he was playing in a little club in Syracuse and we became friends. Young women threw themselves at him, but he never did more than smile back. Then I met Naedine and saw why! My grandson is a budding guitarist and just this Christmas I played several of Eddie's albums for him. Eddie was an honest-to-goodness original. Though we haven't seen each other in several years, I feel a hole in my life to know that he's gone. My deepest sympathies to Anne and Naedine, Eddie and Kevin. Bob Lauterborn

I'm really saddened to learn of Eddie's passing ... I was a student of his for a couple of years in the early 90's. I still play many of his arrangements and always think of him when doing so. He was very inspirational to me. I admired him greatly.

My deepest sympathies to his family.

My wife's son found the album we recorded back in the early 1960's when Eddie was playing at the Embers and gave it to me for Christmas. I had not seen it since then, went to the internet and found that Eddie had passed just a month ago. That album brought back fond memories and I had hoped to find him alive and well. So sorry to hear that he is no longer with us.
If I had not received that surprise Christmas gift that my wife's son had found amoung hundreds of old record albums, Eddie's "At The Embers", I never would have known.

God bless. The music business we all loved will miss another great contributor. The Embers had a fabulous 12 years from 1960-1973. We had all of the top jazz entertainers at our club during that period, from Mel Torme, Oscar Peterson, and all the ones who also played at Mr Kelly's in Chicago to Wayne Newton. On Christmas day, it brought back so many memories, ones we will never forget and Eddie was the only one who made an album there.

Dear Hazell Family, I learned how to play the guitar with uncle Eddie, i was not aware of his passing and recently learned from my mother Diane Hazell Carpenter; Eddie was her cousin, and my second cousin. I will always remember him most by his love of music and what he passed on to me. I still play today and will always remember fondly all my lessons with "uncle Eddie" as i will remember him forever!!!!!

I have one of Eddie's LPs, the one with "Mimosa", have been playing guitar and singing for some 40 years. Yeah, he had a great solo act ability if he needed to. Definitely an inspiration.

I had the pleasure of taking lessons from Eddie between 1999 and 2002- he was always the consummate professional and a stand up gentleman. I had the good fortune to do a duo date with him in Montclair and see him perform with his trio a good number of times. He was a one -of -a kind musician.

Eddie was my son's guitar teacher for many years in Pompton Plains..his legacy lives on everytime my son, now a dad, plays the guitar for his kids. He was the definitive gentleman and gentle man...a pleasure to listen to him play with his trio.

In the late 1960's he appeared in a piano bar I owned at that time named "Charlie Dicken's located in North Bergen, NJ. My sincere condolences to his family. He will be missed. George Fleck

To Ed's Family,

I remember Ed when he attended Passaic Valley High School and was head of the 4 Echos. They played the music for several of the school dances. I believe I submitted some photos of the group to the Little Falls Historical Society to be preserved.
