Edward Harker Obituary

HARKER Edward W., Jr., attorney, retired partner of the Hackensack, NJ law firm of Nashel Kates Nussman Rapone & Ellis, WW II veteran, 93, died on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007. A private burial is to be arranged. Edward lived most of his life in Bayonne, from his birth on Nov. 6, 1914, and later resided in Wilmington, NC, and southeastern Pennsylvania. He completed his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees at Cornell University in 1935. He practiced law for 55 years in New Jersey and New York as a partner with Platoff, Heftler and Harker of Union City. During this time he completed a Masters in Taxation at New York University. He was a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He earned a Bronze Star for his service related to campaigns in the Northern Solomon Island and Philippines. Edward had a lifelong passion for music. He played piano, guitar, violin and in later years sang in a barbershop chorus. He enjoyed traveling with his grandchildren and step-grandchildren and maintained a summer residence in Sea Bright. He was predeceased by his wives, Helen (Jozwiak) Harker and Patricia (Rinehart) Harker, and a son, Edward W. Harker. Surviving are his sister, Virginia Waters and her husband, Alan, of Middletown; and by his four children, James F. Harker of Wilmington, Del., Ruth Harker Edmondson of Media, Pa., and her husband, Robert, Gail Harker of South Pasadena, Calif., and John S. Harker and his wife, Betsy, of Barrington, R.I. In addition he is survived by his daughter-in-law Jane (Simmns) Harker of Carlisle, PA. He was the grandfather to eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Army Emergency Relief, 200 Stovall St., Alexandria, VA 22332.

The world is a degree poorer with the news of Ed's passing.We had an"old fogies group" in Wilmington who met for lunch on a regular basis.Our conversations were always animated and even noisy.
