Elsie Downey Obituary
Elsie Winifred of Los Angeles, CA, age 88, died peacefully on February 1, 2014 following an illness.
Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, Elsie married John Alexander Downey, M.D. They moved to Closter, NJ in 1960 where Elsie lived until relocating to Los Angeles in 2010.
Elsie is survived by four children - Richard, Susan, Robert, and Jennifer, and nine grandchildren.
For many years, Elsie was an active member and secretary of Norwood Presbyterian Church, Norwood, NJ. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who was loved by her many, many friends. Her joy and presence will be missed by the many whose lives she touched.
Memorial Service: March 8, 2014 at 2 PM with a reception to follow at the church hall. Norwood Presbyterian Church 701 Broadway Norwood, NJ.

You could say Elsie rented me a room for 6 months, but it was so much more. My marriage had ended and I was trying to finish my dissertation. Elsie provided a warm and grounded home to re-stabilize my life. We watched tennis (she loved tennis) and Keeping Up Appearances. She was kind, understanding, thoughtful, intelligent, open, and just loving. I cherish those months. She helped right my ship. My deepest condolences to Elsie's family and friends. What a wonderful, bold, and strong life she led!

I lived at 51 Willow Rd. for a few years back in the 1980s. It was more than merely renting a room. Elsie and her family were family to me. Very special. Elsie remains in my heart and memory.

Dear Richard, Susan, Robert, and Jennifer: Thank you, Jennifer, for calling my mother with the very sad news of Elsie's death. Mom and Elsie enjoyed a wonderful friendship for 54 years.
