George, 72, of Bergenfield went to be with his loved ones in heaven on Thursday, March 12. George was beloved by his family and friends for his gentle spirit and big-hearted soul. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Susan Atkinson Braeske, and his three children, Kristine (Jamie) Rodgerson, Michael Braeske (Peggy and her children Vicki, Billy and Jonathan), and Patricia (Anthony) Cavlov. He was cherished by his four granddaughters: Annie, Amelia, Megan and Abby. He is survived by brothers Arnold (Grace) and Martin (Beverly). Predeceased by his parents, Paul and Martha Braeske, his brother Alfred, and his brother-in-law John Atkinson. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Elizabeth Vivenzio, Diane Sto Domingo, Teresa Fargnoli and Patricia Hollenfer, and by his brothers-in-law Norman David Atkinson and Thomas Atkinson, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews. George was a brave firefighter for 33 years employed by the Borough of Bergenfield and for over 40 years with the Bergenfield Volunteer Fire Department, serving one year as Chief. He also volunteered for many years at the St. John's Church food pantry. Visiting will be held Saturday 4-8 PM and Sunday, 5-8 PM, at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 S. Washington Ave, Bergenfield, NJ. A Fire Department Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday at 7 PM. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday at 10 am at St. Therese Church, 120 Monroe Ave, Cresskill, NJ, with interment at George Washington Memorial Park.
